3.0 out of 5 stars A good effort
This movie was made early in 1962 before Elvis had lost his enthusiasm and passion for making films and while he was still a guaranteed box-office success. He plays the part of an ex G.I. (nothing new there) who discovers a talent for boxing as well of course as singing.
The songs are good by Elvis film standards, the standout track being King Of The Whole Wide World...

"Kid Galahad" has always been one of Elvis Presley's better movie efforts from the early sixties, with a good plot, a strong supporting cast (including Gig Young, Charles Bronson, Lola Albright, and Joan Blackman) and a handful of joyful songs.
It is presented here in its widescreen version, in an excellent transfer with especially vibrant colours surpassing all previous video and TV broadcast versions I have seen. There are some minor blemishes on the print but nothing serious. The soundtrack is in mono, yet is clear and free of distortion. Unfortunately, except for the film's theatrical trailer there are no extras included.
Anyone caring for an entertaining Elvis movie needn't hesitate.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Got Lucky., 1 Jun 2013

This review is from: Kid Galahad [DVD] (DVD)
Kid Galahad is directed by Phil Karlson and written by Francis Wallace and William Fay. It stars Elvis Presley, Gig Young, Lola Albright, Joan Blackman and Charles Bronson. Music is by Jeff Alexander and cinematography by Burnett Guffey.

Out of the Amy, Walter Gulick (Presley) heads to his home town of Cream Valley looking for work as a mechanic. Unable to find employment in that field, Walter stumbles upon Willy Grogan's (Young) boxing operation and accepts an offer to spar with one of the fighters for five dollars. Though raw and taking far too many punches, Walter shows himself to have some skill and a knock out punch that flaws the local fighter. This catches the eye of Willy who spies a chance to get himself out of the debt he is in. With romance also in the air, in the form of Willy's sister Rose (Blackman), Cream Valley is about to become a hive of activity; both good and bad!

A musical remake of the 1937 film that starred Edward G. Robinson, Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart, Karlson's Kid Galahad is what it is, a star vehicle for Presley to sing some tunes, fight some guys and win the heart of some dusky beauty. However, in the context of Presley's 60s movie output this is a good one. It has a strong support cast, a more than capable director and a superb cinematographer bringing out the beauty of Idyllwild, California. The King is not in the best of shape, the songs are disposable (with the exception of I Got Lucky) and the finale has a gigantic loose end that annoys greatly. But the songs don't dominate the story, Presley is playing a normal and decent guy and there's a genuine feeling of warmth about the whole thing (though Bronson and Presley didn't see eye to eye apparently).

Safe, enjoyable and looking terrific visually, Kid Galahad is a more than adequate time waster for Presley film seekers. 7/10

3.0 out of 5 stars A good effort, 8 Feb 2011

This movie was made early in 1962 before Elvis had lost his enthusiasm and passion for making films and while he was still a guaranteed box-office success. He plays the part of an ex G.I. (nothing new there) who discovers a talent for boxing as well of course as singing.
The songs are good by Elvis film standards, the standout track being King Of The Whole Wide World and as there are only six numbers in the film there is room to develop the storyline.
The film was shot on location which does help it's overall look.
The supporting cast is good and he gets married all over again to the same girl that he had married in the closing scenes of Blue Hawaii.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kid Galahad"crackin little"Belter!"., 29 Sep 2013

This review is from: Kid Galahad [DVD] (DVD)
Being an Elvis Fan,I love this film, but for a change,it is one movie that stands out on its own without the musical numbers, infact this wouldve benefited without the musical numbers as a movie in its own right. The boxing scenes are well staged and I cant help but feel where the scenes of boxing took a lot of choreography for dramtic effect, the wham bam you got a musical number does not do the movie justice, but,it "just" works and is enjoyable...love the musical numbers, but its a crackin little movie in its own right of a guy who just happens to return to his hometown penniless and to earn a few bucks goes into the local boxing acedemy as sparring partner and turns into a ONE PUNCH CHAMPION,Yes we,ve been here before with Elvis,be it Cars,Boats etc,but this is a little "belter"of a move, with Gig Young and Charles Bronson Taboot...
