5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest guerilla fighters in history.
Well I promise not to mention the editing which seems to have been well covered. Instead I will tell you why I like this film. I like my films to have an air of authenticity and if you wish to know what it was like as a US Calvalry Officer to fight the Apache on their home ground in the American South West then this is the film to watch.

The film is based on a...

3.0 out of 5 stars A great movie but not the definitive DVD release.
One of the best films of the 1970s, ULZANA'S RAID works on many levels - western drama, character study, Vietnam allegory. Unfortunately, this UK DVD release has been heavily cut - and re-edited - to remove all shots of horses being trip-wired. According to the BBFC, this technique falls foul of the 1937 Cinematograph Act, which forbids the ill-treatment of animals during...

4.0 out of 5 stars Speaking up for the horses, 28 Dec 2011
This review is from: Ulzana's Raid [DVD] (DVD)
I'm writing this primarily in answer to that of Michael Round and others like him. The absurd notion that the British viewer is more comfortable with human torture scenes compared to seeing horses shot is patent nonsense. Whilst obviously graphic " it's only a movie, Ingrid!" The difference is that no-one has yet explained to the equine participants that, for the purpose of human entertainment, they will have their legs unexpectedly swept from under them whilst travelling at full pelt! ( The human actors chose to be in the movie!!) It would seem likely that Mr. Round will have a pithy reaction to the forthcoming " War Horse" if, indeed, he deigns to watch it because of his cynical views about horses in combat. For a truly accurate viewpoint about them, from at least some of the actual participants in warfare, ( rather that armchair commentators...) may I suggest he reads the excellent book " Tommy's Ark " by Richard van Emden. He will, no doubt, be quite astonished by the compassionate views held by both officers and ordinary ranks alike!

See my entry on DVD version. A ruined film. Please note that the Video version has the same cut time as the DVD version... which means the horse killings have been cut out... utter stupidity and the ruination of a fine film. Am trying to get a German version as recommended. Damn the regulations.

4.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE THE OBJECTORS, 21 Aug 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Ulzana's Raid [DVD] (DVD)
Bonkers and sheer stupidity, bullets flying everywhere, a human being raped, (suggestive), torture, (visual) and killings/shootings, (visual), oh, also Lancaster and Co lighting up smokes all over the place, and all in glorious technicolour (excuse the pun), but lets chop out the horse tripping up scenes because it will offend all those animal lovers out there. What a load of garbage, I am surprised they dont ban every western because all the cowboys wear spurs which dig into the sides of the horse flesh. Bah humbugz!
Ok, all that aside, this is a brilliantly produced western which has a great story to tell. It is a violent one (I think so anyway) but necessary to the portrayal of the time and place and nature of the story line.
I would have given this the thumbs up for a five star but because of the unnecessary editing of scenes it gets a four star. Oh what the heck, somebody earned their wages that day and got a pat on the back, but never mind, it is a very good film just make sure you buy the version you want to see, (differences as explained in some of the other reviews here).
