This review is from: It's Monk's Time (Audio CD)
It`s Monk`s Time, from 1964, is one of the great man`s freshest, punchiest offerings of the period, a lengthy album made happily longer with the addition of extra tracks.
There`s three standards here, alongside three Monk originals, none of them the usual standbys from his repertoire.
Lulu`s Back In Town opens with a gloriously expansive solo exploration by Monk before the band come in: Monk stalwart Charlie Rouse on tenor sax - one of his finest dates, this - Butch Warren on bass, and Ben Riley in the drum seat.
The trio of Monk tunes consists of Stuffy Turkey, Brake`s Sake & Shuffle Boil (someone should write a book solely about jazz titles and their meanings, or lack thereof) and all feature the band on full alert, with some inventive solos, Rouse`s sometimes reedy, dry sax having a pleasingly fulsome, searching sound on this outing.
The lovely Memories Of You & Monk favourite Nice Work If You Can Get It are solos, Thelonious dancing along the keys as though newly inventing a way to play his instrument. Thrilling.
The sound is good, the extra tracks most welcome, and the album is, needless to say, essential.

This review is from: It's Monk's Time (Audio CD)
This was the third COLUMBIA album from the great pianist/composer Thelonious Monk(1917-1982) comprising four sessions recorded on January 29/30, February 10 & March 9, 1964 with Charlie Rouse(tenor sax); Butch Warren(bass) & Ben Riley(drums).
Everyone is in exuberant form on the nine tracks(including three bonus takes) which feature three rarely-played Monk originals: 'Stuffy Turkey'(2 takes), 'Brake's Sake' & 'Shuffle Boil'. There's a wonderful version of 'Lulu's Back in Town' displaying Monk's stride piano roots plus dazzling solo performances of 'Nice Work If You Can Get It''(2 takes) & 'Memories of You'.
'It's Monk's Time' is a beautifully recorded album containing over an hour of inventive and exhilarating music that deserves a place in any modern jazz collection.
