4.0 out of 5 stars le fric, c'est chic, 26 April 2013
This review is from: Spirit (Audio CD)
I can understand - reluctantly - that people in long-running traditional bands get a bit fed up, and want to vary the formula. That, I suppose, is why this album ends with a long 'Celtic freak-out' number, followed by a long pause, followed by an unaccompanied (and uncredited) lament in Irish by Cathy Jordan. Prompted, I presume, by the death of the group's long-time road manager, it's an arresting performance for raw emotion; but, whilst Jordan's vocals always work well with the band, sean-nos isn't her thing. Before that, Lag's Song and Beauties of Autumn, two weak tracks, form a substantial longueur in the middle of the album; and it would be fair to say that the whole thing feels a little bit overweight.

That's why, despite some superb songs and sets, this doesn't quite warrant the full 5 stars. Maybe it's true that the sad death of their friend knocked the band sidewise. Still, well worth a listen.
