4.0 out of 5 stars Suspicions, truth and lies, 25 Nov. 2003
This review is from: Noir - Vol. 5 [DVD] (DVD)
I own the region 1 release, which is identical in content.
This volume, titled "Terminal Velocity", contains just three episodes.
Still stricken by the tragic loss of her uncle, Mirielle decides to return to Corsica to find out what really happened so long ago, and face her nightmares; and so she dares to return to the mansion where her family was murdered. But what she discovers is not what she had been expecting, and the knowledge is not learned without its consequences... the price of knowing the truth is more than she would ever have imagined, and it will change her life forever.
It's in this volume that the series finally approaches the point of no return. There will be no more breaks or interludes in the main plot from this volume onward, no more one-off assassination assignments, and no more "character" episodes. The relationship between our two main characters finally becomes strained to breaking point, even as Mirielle and Kirika work their way ever closer to the sinister truth about the past, and begin to understand what plans the elusive Soldats have laid for them. Will this be the end of the partnership, and will Mirielle be carry out her promise and kill Kirika?
The DVD itself is as fine as they have ever been for this series; well presented, and a fairly new series usually means an excellent transfer of audio and video. The asking price is not unreasonable and the show itself is top notch, a benchmark for new productions to be measured by. The only reason that this release will not get higher marks is that this volume only contains three episodes, as do volumes 3 (The Firing Chamber) and 7 (The End of the Matter). While it's well in keeping with the "fresh chapter" format in which the DVD volumes are being released, you can't help but feel irritated...
Overall, a cutting action anime release for the new year, in a stylish and well-presented DVD. Easily worth Four Stars on quality alone.
