The BBC Philharmonic has recorded a lot of Respighi's music for Chandos over the years, first with the Conductor Edward Downes (1990's) and more recently Gianandrea Noseda. In fact this CD is the first recording Noseda and the BBC Orchestra made together of some of Respighi's lesser known music. Recorded in 2002 it contains his La Boutique fantasque, La pentola magica and an Orchestration he did of JS Bach's Prelude and Fugue.

These are all strikingly played by the BBC Philharmonic with the strings, intimate woodwind and brass sounding delightful in the warm Chandos sound.

This is a terrible album. Soundwise it would have been quite a decent recording but unfortunately something seems to have gone with the tracks. For example, some of the tracks either stop playing part way through (because the track has finished but the music hasn`t) and then continues from where it left off at the beginning of the next track. There is also a tendency for the final seconds of a previous track to begin again just before the next section starts. Most unpleasant recording. For your information, this same album is also available on iTunes, but is even worse. Don`t know how this can be, but it is. Given one star because I can`t give it any less.
