5.0 out of 5 stars THEIR BEST
If you consider 'Slaughter Of The Soul' as typical for them (okay, it has a great sound, but only a few killer-tracks), then you don't see the bigger picture... ATG was the first band that could bring poetry/emotion in a brutal way, without turning down the guitars, without slowing down the pace... you could hear it a bit on their debut, but it came to full perfection on...

3.0 out of 5 stars poor production but that aint the only problem
at the gates are a band that have influenced so many great bands with their ability to fuse savage metal with melody and without them we wouldnt have in flames, soilwork, darkane etc so it is easy to believe that at the gates are flawless and for the majority of their cds that is the case but with fear i kiss the burning darkness there is something not quite right...

ATG was the first band that could bring poetry/emotion in a brutal way, without turning down the guitars, without slowing down the pace... you could hear it a bit on their debut, but it came to full perfection on this release. It's something they lost among the way (you don't hear any melancholy on their last effort). The only flaw of this album is the production... but consider that, part of the charm of the album.

4.0 out of 5 stars I actually love this album, 4 Oct 2013
This review is from: With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness (Audio CD)
I only give it 4 stars because of the production which is a bit of a let down if you've heard Slaughter of the Soul first. But I still find all the playing and music really interesting. There are so many cool time changes and parts of beautiful dissonance. It sounds really desperate in places and really makes me feel something that I don't get from any other albums. Personally I never really got on with their first album and Terminal Spirit Disease is just a bit short without many interesting parts in the songs. Slaughter of the Soul is without doubt their best album as it has no filler, great production and basically spawned a new genre, but this album is still worth your time if you can get past the sound. For me that took about 10 listens but now I've been listening to it for years and I really do enjoy it.

Granted the production is poor but so is alot of classics like darkthrones a blaze in the northern sky,it appears to me after a few listens that this is almost an album of b sides or something, the songs dont gel and create the masterpiece that we expect, some songs just appear for the sake of it i believe and if im wrong then i will admit im wrong but that appears to be the genral feeling from the other reviewers so i cant be that wide of the mark,of course it isnt all bad ,there is still some great guitar work on show and the trademark gothenberg sound albeit still in its infancy here can be picked out from time to time, songs like the break of autumn and the burning darkness are great songs and i give it three stars because two stars just sounds mean for an at the gates release, make of that what you will

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing Special, 3 Sep 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness (Audio CD)
I really am an "At the gates" fan and a fan of the entire genre as a whole but this album is definitely best avoided!
The production is what really lets it down but the riffs jar, the leads don't exactly do much leading and are nothing special in any case and the vocals scuff along as guttural screams. In addition the album doesn't seem to hang together...it's just a bunch of tracks that they happen to think are finished.
A standard effort then and the only reason I have given it such a low mark is two fold, first there is a lot better out there nowadays including "In flames" "Lamb of God" and "Arch Enemy" to name a few, secondly "Slaughter of the Soul" another At the gates effort is quite possibly the best example of this music and totally brilliant, a marked contrast to With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness.
If you have Slaughter of the Soul and your thinking of checking this out...don't!...get something new instead!
