This review is from: The Disappearance Of Finbar [DVD] (DVD)
I first saw this film some years ago on tv and was really mesmerised by it. I was also astonished and disappointed not to have been able to see it anywhere since. I was greatly cheered to find it available on DVD having got a player at Christmans and got this DVD version which is a quality reproduction. A chance to see it again after years of waiting has not dispappointed. It's a well scripted and well crafted film, the acting is great and while the underlying plot has quite a sad resonance there are also tremendously funny bits threading though it too (look out for the song 'So long Finnbar Flynn' and you'll see what I mean). There are some wonderfully eccentric characters in the story too.
The filming of the fabulous scandanavian landscape is a joy to behold - deserving of an 'oscar' if you ask me (alas the people who award them probably haven't seen this..). There's also lovely music too as icing on the cake.
If you like affecting stories about people with troubled relationships - rather than action and violence etc. then get a copy of this and watch it, it's really tremendous and worth repeated viewings. It's almost poetic to my mind.
Brilliant !

5.0 out of 5 stars A poem in film form, 27 Feb 2007
This review is from: The Disappearance Of Finbar [DVD] (DVD)
Beautiful, easily one of the best films I've ever seen and yet extremely difficult to describe in a review. There is a storyline, but the film meanders around very slowly as it heads toward it's climax, taking the time to explore notions of friendship and how people perceive their place in communities and places, that sort of thing. The acting is superb but it's the cinematography that really helps the film to stand out, lots of shots of Dublin looking gritty and then moving onto wonderfully filmed shots of Northern Sweden. It's not to everyone's taste, it's slow and not a great deal happens but i feel it's worth giving a try if you've the patience. I have to say i don't usually enjoy this sort of art house stuff either but am probably biased as i lived for a year in Finland and fell in love with all things Scandinavian. Overall highly recommended

I am not reviewing it as I am the director! I just wanted to thank the people below for saying such nice things.. ad also if Amazon sees this, that in some places on the site it says this film was made by Reiska Laine, who is someone Ive never heard of. You can check I am the director on IMDb etc etc and on the box!

4.0 out of 5 stars Irish boy escapes to Finland, 26 Dec 2012
This review is from: The Disappearance Of Finbar [DVD] (DVD)
The quite surprising story of a young man disappearing from Ireland and then found again by his friend in Finland is interesting. I liked the way the Finns are depicted. The acting is good, but the filming is somewhat chaotic and not always enjoyable.
