4.0 out of 5 stars Patriot Games, 2003 Special Collector's Edition - Harrison Ford provides us with the definitive Jack Ryan.
`Hunt for Red October', with its strong central performances and taut direction, was always going to be a tough act to follow. For this entry into the Ryan series Harrison Ford steps up to the plate as Ryan, and really carries the film with an excellent performance.

After foiling a seeming IRA attempt to kidnap a prominent British Royal, one of the terrorists...

3.0 out of 5 stars Product is fine
The seller is fine. The problem is the Amazon UK website which regularly adds items that I have not ordered, i.e. in this case it added an extra Patriot Games DVD which slipped by me, so I end up paying more than I wanted to. Later today, I received an extra 3 pack of Lavender Soap that I didn't order, but Amazon website had made it 2 items instead of 1.

This film, based on a novel by Tom Clancy, is a story about the IRA and extremist republican splinter groups and their ongoing war against the British occupation of Northern Ireland. One such group led by Sean Miller (Sean Bean), his brother and Kevin O'Donnell (Patrick Bergin) try to blow up a car containing members of the Royal Family in London. On hand at the time is former U.S. marine Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) who is visiting London with his wife Dr Cathy Ryan (Anne Archer) and their little daughter Sally (Thora Birch). As Ryan get involved in the assassination attempt, he kills Miller's brother and Miller himself gets captured, while Ryan is injured. The IRA do not approve of this breakaway group killing royals because it puts their cause in an even more unfavourable light, so there is some in-fighting amongst the terrorists as well. The Ryans go back to Washington after their holiday and Ryan himself resumes work at the CIA. The rest of the story presents the attempts of the CIA to track down the terrorists and Miller's attempts to find the Ryans to avenge the death of his brother. This was a very exciting film!

I watched this film for the first time, and in the first 10 minutes it was amazing how realistic it was. It had a brilliant story line, it tells you about the IRA and what they have done, and what kind of people they were. it had massive detail.
it tells you about revenge and trust.

GREAT ACTION MOVIE

This Special Edition DVD has a great soundtrack, a full set of bonus features and, of course, a great film.

This was the first of Ford's Jack Ryan films and it set a high standard for all the others. Stationed in Britain, Ryan, an ex-marine now CIA, saves the life of a British Royal and, in doing so, kills an IRA member whose brother, Sean Bean, vows to kill Ryan and pursues him relentlessly for the rest of the film. The cast plays their roles to perfection and, although the ending was a spectacular climax too far for me, stretching belief and taking what had been a credible story into fantasy Hollywood, "let's blow 'em up again; get the petrol" land, it is well worth watching.

"Patriot Games", for the most part, is a believable narrative, well acted with tight direction. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jack Ryan fits Harrison Ford like a second skin!, 21 Oct 2008
This review is from: Patriot Games Special Edition [DVD] [1992] (DVD)
Who better to play down-to-earth hero Jack Ryan than the-guy-next-door? Harrison Ford does Tom Clancy's character complete justice. With his crooked smile, and as ever fantastic acting, Patriot Games is a sheer pleasure to watch.

More often than not, movies do not do justice to the books. This however is not the case here. Of course a movie cannot possibly include all the little details that a book can, but even those who never read Clancy's books would enjoy this movie. Good dose of action and drama...couple of hours perfect entertainment!

This adaptation ot Clancy's novel of the same name is outstanding- Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan is once again excellent in this thriller.

The story centres on Ryan, who having left the CIA behind years previously to focus on his family, gives a lecture in London during a holiday with his wife and daughter. In a chance encounter in Mayfair, Ryan defends an attack on a member of the Royal Family by a brutally ruthless IRA-ofshoot faction, killing one of two brothers involved, and thus incurring the wrath of the elder brother, Sean Miller (Sean Bean), the leader of the attack, who will stop at nothing to get revenge. Having recuperated and testified against Miller, Ryan returns home with his family, only to find that Miller has escaped from prison and is coming after him. This turn of envents puts an initially reluctant Ryan back in the CIA, as he endeavours to protect the lives of himself and his family. Tense and gripping scenarios ensue, including a lights-out, nail-biting finale at Ryan's remote home, and some excellent action sequences.

The acting is great- Sean Bean's Ulster accent is spot-on and the supporting cast, including Polly Maberly, is very good too. The script is intelligent and entertaining, and the soundtrack is pretty good too. Of all the Clancy films, this is my favourite.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FILM, 26 Sep 2007
This review is from: Patriot Games Special Edition [DVD] [1992] (DVD)
Gripping stuff. Harrison Ford plays Dr. Jack Ryan, loosely employed with the CIA. Ryan foyles an IRA attack on a member of the Royal family, whilst working in London, in which one of the gunmen (Sean Bean) loses his younger brother. Out for revenge, Bean targets Ryan's family and injur his wife and daughter in a hit and run style car attack. Ryan joins the CIA and unravels the IRA cell.

Great action and very clever story from Tom Clancy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harrison Ford V Sean Bean, what an event, 10 Sep 2000

This review is from: Patriot Games [DVD] [1992] (DVD)
This film is based on the novel by Tom Clancy of the same name. It is truly an outstanding film, full of intense action and edge of seat thrill. The price of heroism come dearly to jack ryan, almost costing him the lives of his family, but i wont tell you anymore about the film, that would spoil it. Needless to say the film is brilliently made and keeps to the general plot of the novel which is good.
Buy it just to see it.
Go on you know you want to.
