5.0 out of 5 stars One of the finest American symphonies, 13 May 2006

This review is from: Diamond - Symphony No 1; Violin Concerto (Audio CD)
For years, David Diamond was a footnote in the history of the American symphony, overshadowed by Ives, Harris, Piston, Schuman, Hanson, Barber and Copland. However, this recording makes a persuasive case for redressing the balance. The first symphony is a powerful work which, although written in an accessible, tonal language, is dense and contrapuntal enough to fully engage the grey matter. Diamond's style is similar to the mid-twentieth century 'Americana' (i.e a blend of Stravinsky and home-grown influences), but unlike Roy Harris or Copland, never breaks into a hoedown. I have many recordings of American symphonies, but the only three I play regularly are Roy Harris's 3rd, Copland's 3rd and this powerful and engaging work.
