A clear, simple realisation of Orwell's dystopic novella, the film provides a memorable piece of drama. Evocative music and bold, stylised drawing allow the menacing inevitability of the animals' fate to hit home. Of course, no film can outdo Orwell's crafted simplicity but this version's imagery unsettles and provokes. Definitely not one for the kiddies- unless they like chilling allegories!

Aninal Farm, along with 1984, are classic works of Orwell's political imagination, attempting to navigate a way which opposes left-wing hypocrisy defending Stalinist Soviet Russia, while opposing the lies and deceit which capitalism is based on and the growing march towards authoritarianism in the West. He tried to map out this 'third way' - as democratic socialism was called by its adherents in the 1940s - at the time of the emergence of the Cold War.

It is not entirely Orwell's responsibility that his two great works of the end of his life - have been misunderstood and that the right has tried to appropriate him for their case. In one sense, Orwell's concerns are universal and about the search for what it means to be human in face of the remorseless logic of the system. In this, Orwell's thinking transcends left and right. However, on another level, Orwell came to these issues, unambiguously from the left, challenging the left, its deficiencies and hypocrisy, and asking questions about morality, ethical concerns and the frailties and inadequacies of the capitalist system and the lives it allowed most people to live. Thus, the right can never fully claim Orwell.

That is where films like this come in. This is a deliberate distortion of Orwell's great work, a product of Cold War thinking, and as we now know, directly funded by the CIA as part of its propaganda effort. This film totally changes Orwell's book - from being about Stalinism, to about the failure of Communism.

Thus, the Snowball character is made less sympathetic to prevent their being an alternative revolutionary leader (like Trotsky),and the ending is completely revised. In Orwell's account it is impossible in closing for any difference to be seen between the pigs and men, whereas in the film, no difference can be seen between the pigs, and in the final scenes, the animals rise up against their new rulers - something in line with American government thinking at the time.

A tragedy of a film and a debasement of Orwell. Its only interest is as a period piece making Orwell's point about the lies and hypocrisy systems in the West and East both utilised in the Cold War, and showing the relevance of Orwell's concerns then and now.

The developed plot and characters entertains, challenges and educates. This is an intelligent film, perfect for children with enquiring minds. If you do buy this for children, be ready for the questions that it provokes.
