5.0 out of 5 stars Back to love back to brilliance!!, 28 May 2003
This review is from: Back To Love 03.03 (Audio CD)
Well this is now the 5th edition of the back to love series on hed kandi and for me personally this has the best 1st Cd out of the whole series.
With such gems like the chilled house of Frankie knuckles "whistle Song" to the late 80's floorfilling classic "if only i could" from sydney youngblood this is truly a compilation to reminisce.
For me personally "yeke Yeke" "the real thing" "right and exact" and "Le Voie Du Soleil" are the highlights as those were the tunes i remember hearing in my intense clubbings days between 1994-97 it just brings back many memories.
The 2nd Cd is superb too and compared to the previous edition there is a more soulful feel with tunes from kenny thomas, a young luther vandross and nu colours but there are plenty of top class funky beats and old skool hip hop in the form of lyn collins, beats international, eric B and rakims awesome coldcut remix and Heavy D..go out and buy now an essential purchase on the real club tunes back in the day i'm already looking forward to the next edition.

Probably the best album i've bought in a couple of years! Whether you were a part of the clubbing era that had such character and heart, or your a newcomer who wants to look back, few albums will beat this. With Disc 1 including classic full beat tracks such as The Whistle Song and The Real Thing, you instantly know quality is here. The Real Thing is personally one of my all time favourite club tracks for its lovely rhythm and great vocals, while Blue reminds us of that classic organ sound that made up the begining for trance of the early 90's.

The 2nd disc is well put together with a soul theme, and quite a varied affair. In its own way, its better than the first disc in that the songs stand out more. Greater Love, Heaven and Outstanding are all brilliant slow beat songs with great piano rhyth's, and We've Got Our Own Thing nicely takes place half way through the disc with its feel good sounds and 'togetherness' that was of clubbing at the time. Footsteps, the final track, rounds up the cd nicely with continuing feel good theme that this album houses.

The quality of the packaging is excellent as ever (thick card digipack with magnetic fastening) and so is the music, making a change from the vinyl quality albums I'm so used to! (Renaissance - unbeatable!) A must for the 'real' clubber, not the bass freak.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful trip down memory lane, 3 Dec. 2003

I have always looked forward to a new "Back to Love" release by Hed Kandi, wondering what choice tracks are going to be on it and they havent disappointed with this one. In fact its an absolute Cracker. From the first strains of Frankie Knuckles "The Whistle Song" right through to Frances Nero's "Footsteps" (the highlight for me on this album) we are taken on a journey through Clubland's heritage from 88 through to '93. As ever the album is unmixed and I really like this as you get the full track to listen to in its entirety.
Particular highlights for me include the cool soulful sound of Kenny Thomas "Outstanding" and Sydney Youngblood's "If Only I could", the uplifting Chrissie Ward's "Right and Exact" and the beautiful sound of Frances Nero's "Footsteps", a true hidden gem!
So, good on you Hed Kandi, and you are to be applauded for this type of album and keep 'em coming!

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to love back to brilliance, 3 Jun. 2003
This review is from: Back To Love 03.03 (Audio CD)
This is the 5th edition of the excellent Back to Love series and hed kandi have once again came up with a fantastic selection of old skool cuts.
The format for the BTL series is the 1st CD consists of old house and Cd2 comprises of soul, funk, rare groove and hip hop.
I have to say the selection on CD1 on this current BTL compilation is for me personally the best yet.
So many of the cuts are tunes that bring happy memories of my mad clubbing days between 94-97. An absolute classic that still sounds fresh today is Le voie du soleil which was hammered by pretty much every respectable DJ when it came out and when the piano kicks in you just loose the plot:) Other mentions must go to tony di bart "the real thing" "right and Exact" yeke Yeke" and la tour "blue" every other tune on this first CD is top quality too and a special mention must go to sydney youngbloods soulful chilled house of "if only i could".
CD2 starts off with 3 old skool soul jams from the early 90's "outstanding" by kenny thomas is a personal fave then it moves on to hip hop with four cuts with two of the best hip hop breaks cuts ever in "paid in full" and "king of the beats"
The CD ends with four old funk tracks "butterfly" features a young luther vandross which is great record but for pure funk you cannot beat the james brown penned and hevily sampled think by lyn collins and thats it i highly highly recommend this compilation and i look forward eagerly to BTL 6!!
