This is certainly a blast from the past. But now I'm older I can understand the cutting humor that was in this series. Richard Briars does a wonderful job. But what can you say. It is a fun collection of animated shorts. If you are looking for something deep, as Richard says in one of the episodes, "you are embarking up the wrong tree."

Who over 30 does not remeber and cherish this cartoon??? Brilliant theme tune, surreal and clever humour (of that odd, almost druggy quality) and the animation that seemed to be wobbly felt tip drawings by five year olds. Add Richard Brier's superb narration........perfect recipe. What is not to love??? The DVD is also excellent value with all 30 episodes and a game for a very small price. Go buy!!!!

This really is great fun and I now get a lot of the jokes that went over my head as a kid. I wasn't sure if today's kids would appreciate it though. I shouldn't have worried - my seven year old loves it.
It's great that my son says that this is far funnier than most of today's cartoons, and my two year old now prefers Mary, Mungo aand Midge to the Teletubbies!

Time's a funny old thing and I remember Roobabrb with great affection from my childhood. I didn't remember how insane it was though. It has some jokes/puns which will be totally lost on small children like 'what a cool yule' at christmas time. This programme also looks at the world from a childlike perspective, my two year old often asks for it to be put on and even sings the theme tune. I can recomend it to any parent who want's to enjoy watching with their offspring.

I was hooked the first time I heard theme tune back in 1974. The wonderful wobbly animation also helped to ensure it a place in my heart. Even if my memories are coupled with its Swedish name Rabalder and the Swedish narrator Sven Lindberg, it is a joy to listen to Richard Brier's narration. It is fantastic that the original 1974 Roobarb series finally is available on DVD. And Yes I know: If you are just interested in the theme tune you can find it on the iTunes store or as a clip on Youtube. My advice is that you buy the DVD and view it in small portions at a time.

Firstly, the last paragraph of Amazon's review states that there are only 8 episodes on this release. It's wrong, there are 10. (As the Synopsis states!)
1 When Custard stole the Show
2 When Roobard wasn't as pleased as Punch
3 When Roobard turned over a new leaf
4 When there was someone else
5 When the Day wouldn't keep still
6 When Roobard got a long break
7 When the Pipes call the tune
8 When a Knight lost his Day
9 When Custard got too near the bone
10 When there was a big mix-up
These are all great fun for kids, young and old!

For anyone who is a fan of Roobarb, the mangey green mongrel, this video is obviously an essential addition to your collection. For those who haven't heard of him, or his cohort Custard the odious cat, rest assured that Roobarb is possibly more beloved by fans of animation, young and old, than Mickey Mouse, who long ago gave up being as inventive and comic.
"When Roobarb Made A Spike",for example, is brilliant, tightly scripted, and never leaves "the back garden". Flying green dogs are funny enough, but when they are flying green BIRD dogs who like to call themselves Roobarb, one simply can't resist!

This is the VHS tape but you can get DVDs! Once you hear the tune, you're hooked, and despite the initial strangeness of the animation, the humour delivered by Richard Briers' narration is irresistible and makes you smile all over. Hooray for potty green Roobarb the dog, and his ever dry nemesis, Custard the pink cat. Ideal for those who were pretty much compos mentis in the 1970s and who remember fondly when animation was distinctly basic. Classic, cult stuff.

Classic capers from the duo in the garden. This is something I grew up with as a child and now my son enjoys the comic tales and nonsencical stores of Roobarb and custard and the adventures that they have in the garden.

I bought this as a gift for some younger children who, until this, had only really seen CGI children's shows. They love the look of the show and think the content is hilarious.
