5.0 out of 5 stars A great budget camcorder!
If you're looking to buy a simple to use miniDV digital camcorder that won't break the bank, then you could do a lot worse than this.
It comes with almost everything you'll need so you won't end up forking out for extra things like a long-life lithium-ion battery.
The 800k pixel CCD means the picture quality is very good, and the LCD screen is adequate.

The camcorder itself is easy to use, and can be operated at the push of just one button, although more technical users could make use of the manual focus and extra sound settings.
There is a port for an external microphone, and a setting that removes the interference from wind noise.
The only thing you may have to buy is a firewire card if you wanted to download your movies to the PC, but these are cheap, and easy to install.
I'm very happy with it, and would recommend it to anybody thinking about entering the world of camcorders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great quality camcorder., 6 Sep 2003
This review is from: Samsung VPD80 Digital Camcorder [Mini-DV 10xOptical DV-out] (Electronics)
This is my first camcorder, and for £300, I can't fault it.
It's a fairly small Mini DV camcorder with 800K CCD, and the picture quality is great.
A lithium ion battery is included, and lasts for about 2 hours.
It has connections for an external microphone, wind noise reduction, and pretty good image stabilisation.
The buttons are easy to reach, and it's very simple to use.
However,if you want to download your movies to your PC, you'll need to buy and install a Firewire card in your PC, but these are cheap, and for £300, you can't complain to much!
Tops!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor quality, not the usual from Samsung, 4 Jan 2006
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Samsung VPD80 Digital Camcorder [Mini-DV 10xOptical DV-out] (Electronics)
My mother bought one of these from Amazon in Dec 2003 as an Xmas present for my father. It's only had very occasional use around holiday time. It first went faulty in August 2004 having only been used for about 2hrs in total. It was sent to their nominated warranty people for repair, as the LCD and EVF both stopped working, and the camcorder was getting very hot.
After 2 months they finally got the camcorder back, and didn't use it much until summer 2005 on holiday. Again a fault has appeared, total use now stands at about 4hrs, and now the displays will show a image played back from tape, but not what you are recording. It seems to me that there is now some sort of fault with the recording mechanism, as it's recording only sound and no picture.
We've written to Samsung hopeful they'll consider replacing it, as even though it's out of warranty, we've had nowhere near fair use out of it. It would have been cheaper to hire one !!!
Hopefully Samsung will come up with a solution to restore our faith in them, as normally they are good products.
