5.0 out of 5 stars "Depressing Bubblegum Music", 27 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: New Despair (Audio CD)
Stephin Merritt is a genius. Anyone who has waded their way through his magnum opus, "69 Loves Songs", can attest to that. Here, in one of his many side projects, he (successfully) attempts to write "depressing bubblegum music" (His words, not mine) With lyrics as morbid as 'the world's a leech crawling down ones throat' and 'we're in a cave at the end of the world, cooking and eating our friends' I have to think his tounge is wedged firmly in his cheek ... especially as the lyrics are mostly coupled with rather jaunty pop tunes. A great record for a long dark night of the soul.
