5.0 out of 5 stars RLJ at her best, 3 April 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Flying Cowboys (Audio CD)
For me, one of her best albums highlighting her impresive range of vocal styles, from the jazz orientated 'Ghost Train' to the poignant ' Don't let the sun....'and the almost spiritual 'Love is gonna bring us back alive'. The whole album gels in a way that some of her other albums don't quite manage - not a dud track! I've had this album for years now and I'm still listening. It's been a long time since 'Chuck E'- I wonder why the distinctive rythmn and style, that started there and reaches near perfection on this album didn't make a bigger impact than it did.

5.0 out of 5 stars where did this come from?, 11 Aug 2003
This review is from: Flying Cowboys (Audio CD)
After a well received debut "Rickie Lee Jones", & the excellent follow up "Pirates", the next album "Magazine" disappeared without much trace. Rickie's slightly fey hippy image suggested that the early success was a flash in the pan. Imagine the surprise to find tracks from the new album backing such things as Bay Watch! One of the strengths of Rickie Lee Jones is a melodic gift to accompany her vivid, if sometimes obscure, narrative lyrics (though anyone who likes Fagen & Becker will not have a problem). These tracks also feature some classic West Coast production values, a simply gorgeous sound. I highly recomment this album both to people who have only heard ChuckE, & anyone who enjoys mid period Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars An eye opener, 10 Mar 2004

Yes it is, of course knowing Chuck E's in love I was surprised with the changing moods on this album. The titlesong is an absolute climax, Rickie's voice is sharp and striking. The whole album builds up so well balanced and then fades back giving you time to breath again but never gets boring. Thank you Rickie for sharing this with us.

Rickie Lee Jones teamed up with the Steely Dan to make the perfect album. I loved it then, and I love it now. When you need to slip away to the West in a haze of dreams, this is the album to take you there.

I ordered this having already owned the ordinary CD. The 24K Gold CD is magic. I don't have a top of the range set up but the difference in sound is stunning. For me it's a great buy.
