5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting, melancholic, depressed...amazing., 26 April 2003
This review is from: Tonight's Decision (Audio CD)
Where to start? First, anyone who likes Paradise lost, Opeth, Anathema, etc. owe it to them selves to spend a measly £6.99 on this CD- I promise you will love it.
This album has a less dark sound than excellent later offerings 'Last Fair Deal Gone Down' and 'Viva Emptyness,' but really does catch you right how you want an album like this to...you know the feeling when it's like they wrote the song for a (negative) way you've felt yourself and distilled it to CD? Excellent vocal melodies and tasteful, considered guitar and drum work combine to make what is to me the establishing album of the band. My personal favourite track is 'Right in to the Bliss'- just try not to love it within the 3 seconds it takes for it to kick in- amazing...The extra 2 tracks on the re-issue are also very strong, making the £6.99 even more piddling for such a great piece of work.
You owe it to yourself to try this band. The only trouble is that when you tell people you are in to Katatonia, the next words you say every time are "That's Katatonia with a K!"

katatonias roots lie in bleak black metal, thats what they were like many moons ago and while their style has changed tenfold the sadness and coldness of the content of the lyrics has pretty much stayed the same, katatonia pretty much are in a genre of one these days,no one does their melodic doomy tunes like them, the songs are catchy and haunting and that is almost a contradiction in terms but thats katatonia, the vocals these days are clean but the passion is very much alive here, they dont play overly fast songs or indeed complex songs but they are great songs and emotions are poured throughout,is this the best katatonia album ,maybe ,give it a try
