May we have the old Lloyd Cole back please?
on 22 August 2003
Lloyd Cole, writer of some the finest songs of the late '80s and early '90s started to fade away sometime in the mid '90s. Gone are the days of steely, hard edged guitars and literary refernces; in are soft acoustic guitars and introspective songs about American cities and personal relationships.
Years ago, in songs like 2CV, Cole showed he was capable of carrying off an acoustic based song, but the melody had to be strong. In this set of meandering melodies, the style really doesn't complement his wonderful, distinctive voice.
Less LA, less acoustic guitar, more of Neil Clarke's electric guitar and more references to messing up someone's place please, Lloyd. And most of all, please let's have some up tempo music.
