4.0 out of 5 stars Another compilation, however there are some real gems here!, 2 April 2003
By Dr. A. Nicholls "ajnicholls" (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The 3rd volume of the interesting Acoustic compilations rolls out. And what is on offer this time? There's the obvious hit or two thrown in; Oasis' Songbird, Starsailor's Alcoholic and Dido's Here With Me. However, there are some magnificent tracks lurking amongst songs you probably already own. Michael Andrews and Gary Jules's Mad World from the Donnie Darko soundtrack is the undoubted highlight. I Am Kloot's Untitled # 1 should also merit an honourable mention. There are some more obscure tracks on here - Tom McRae's You Cut Her Hair from his excellent debut album and Ryan Adam's In My Time of Need from 2000's Heartbreaker album are introductions to non-mainstream acts that may inspire interest.
There's old stuff on here as well. The Velvet Underground's fantastic Sunday Morning and Dylan's She Belongs To Me are two great artists at their best.
I do take issue with the definition of acoustic - the Electric Soft Parade's Empty at the End, whilst being a great track, is clearly an amped up performance. However, on a compilation that includes the magnificent Jeff Buckley, Mercury Rev, Beth Gibbons, Elbow and Beth Orton, it would be wrong of me to complain.
There's something for almost everyone on here, and if you don't already own 50% of the tracks on it, it's worth the investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little like a lost weekend........, 24 Mar 2004
Such a strange, strange melange of tracks! Hardly a criticism, but this reminds some that the album is only titled 'Acoustic' and this doesn't prevent its tracks from employing anything but acoustic techniques.
Dido makes her customary appearance, but I am pleased with the inclusion of Doves and Tom McRae.
However, Leonard Cohen , Dylan and Flying Burrito Brothers are certainly the prominent numbers when it comes to those songs not released in the past decade or so.
Conscious of the fact that Nickelback can belt out some pretty heavy stuff, I was plesantly surprised to hear their acoustic offering and its faultless harmonic pitching.
All in all, a safe buy, whether for the car or do unwind with a bottle of Chardonnay.

3.0 out of 5 stars Acoustic 3, 10 May 2004
This album lacks a certain je ne quois...some fairly nice tracks but doesn't stick to the definition of ACOUSTIC, and i didn't really like the cd cover!
For a fiver it's not that bad but it's not one of those albums which is just great. Acoustic 2 is better but I recommend acoustic chill album with lots of little known but highly desirable tracks (the kind you hear on an advert but never manage to find in the cd shop) similar price far greater quality a better buy in my opinion.

1.0 out of 5 stars An essential acoustic CD featuring Dido? I don't think so, 20 May 2004
Need I say more?
This is genuinely awful, the only reason I bought it is for its only highlights: Mad World, and the track by The Bees. I was tempted by the low price of £5 I saw on amazon, but its certainly not worth even a fiver. If you like acoustic music.....look elsewhere.

3.0 out of 5 stars Acoustic it isnt, 19 Jan 2004
Well most of the tracks are fairly downtempo, or live versions of the songs but some are plainly not acouctic songs. That said it is a good collection of songs worth paying the £5 for.

4.0 out of 5 stars good album, 10 Jan 2006
By A Customer
One of the better compilation albums on the market.

mixes mainstream with less well known artists. I have discovered a few great songs and then gone on to buy the artists' albums.

Note.. only a few tracks are truly acoustic!

4.0 out of 5 stars I like it..., 23 Oct 2005
I am not usually a fan of compilation type albums, but I previously bought the first one ("acoustic") in this series and it was excellent. It introduced me to some great artists I would not have come across.

Acoustic 3 is good also (almost as good as the first one), some mainstream stuff and some less well known artists too. I love the stereophonics version of Neil Youngs classic 'Heart of Gold'.
