2.0 out of 5 stars Sentimental Hygiene CD
Only one or two songs up to his usual standard. Disappointing. Love all his other CDs. The last one just a "filler".

Check out Neil Young's spiky lead guitar parts on the title track and Bob Dylan's harp playing on The Factory. Another standout track is the hilarious Detox Mansion, a song about his time in rehab. In my experience Warren Zevon is not well known to the public which is a shame as this album proves what an amazing singer-songwriter he is.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Brilliance From A True Original, 10 Sep 2003

As the previous reviewer states this album features a glittering array of guest performers and is one of Warren's finest albums.
With Peter Buck,Bill Berry & Mike Mills from R.E.M. as his backing band this album is tighter than a gnat's chuff and Warren is on fine form.
The Springsteen-like rockers The Factory, Bad Karma, Trouble Waiting To Happen and the scathing putdowns of Even A Dog Can Shake Hands demonstrate that Warren can rock with the best of them, but always with his deeply sardonic wit ever to the fore. As always with Warren you get great storytelling with the boxing homage Boom Boom Mancini and the brilliant swipe at the cult of "celebrity" addiction clinics Detox Mansion.
Also true to form Warren regales us with his brand of confessional ballads that are neither cheesy or cloyingly sentimental. The heartfelt plea of Reconsider Me and The Heartache reveal the bruised but tender heart lurking beneath Warren's gruff exterior and unlike many of his contemporaries his openness and honesty are genuinely moving.
Undoubtedly Warren's finest album of the 80's and one of his best ever.I would recommend this to anyone who wants a taste of something original and humourously different from the standard cardboard rock copyists.

stellar line up on mass to support the great man, dylan, neil young, all of rem(stipe gets a backing vocal credit). particularly like bad karma(typically sarcastic) and the springsteen mickey take of factory. The ballads are all sympathetically done with you usual levels of zevon darkness. The mans a legend and masively underrated. brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warren Zevon nails it with Sentimental Hygiene, 20 Sep 2008
By
This review is from: Sentimental Hygiene (Audio CD)
I've just started listening to Sentimental Hygiene for the very first time. The title track is mind blowing. This album reconfirms that Zevon has to be the best singer/songwriter that ever graced the planet.

Many people only know Zevon for the Excitable Boy album that included the popular songs "Werewolves of London" and "Lawyers, Guns and Money", however, you owe it to yourself to check out the rest of his albums. They are all equally compelling.

I've just ordered his last few albums "Life Will Kill 'Ya" and "The Wind" and hope to review these in the coming weeks.

In the mid seventies, Zevon was discovered by the likes of Jackson Browne. After that, the rest is history.

The Grammy-Award winning American rock singer-songwriter was known to many for his often offbeat, sardonic view of life which was reflected in his dark, sometimes humorous songs, which often incorporated political or historical themes.

Although Zevon died from cancer in 2003, albums like "Sentimental Hygiene" continue to raise the bar on classic singer-songwriting. Warren Zevon is quite possibly the best singer-songer to emerge from America in years. He's right up there with Dylan, Cash, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, Lindsay Buckingham and all the greats.

Check out the ballad "Reconsider Me" (from the "Sentimental Hygiene" album). Although Zevon liked to rock with the best of them, the ballad shows another side to the man who had it all, lost it, and got it back all over again, just before he passed away.

Now how's that for irony?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Zevon-Fix for the Fans, 31 Oct 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sentimental Hygiene (Audio CD)
Although far from his best work, "Sentimental Hygiene" has all the elements that made Zevon so special, from the heart-breaking ballads, "Reconsider Me" and "The Heartache", through the popular American culturalism of "Boom Boom Mancini" to the trademark bizarre "Bad Karma". Elements of blue collar hardship appear in "The Factory" and you're briefly reminded of Springsteen, but then again there is noone quite like Zevon. Fans won't be disappointed, non-fans won't be converted.

1987 doesn't seem too long ago to me, yet when I hear rock as it was on this album, I realise what a shift there's been in music since. The big keyboard sound on the title track dates the album immediately. Fortunately, although the production values of the era resulted in a lot of pedestrian rock, 'Sentimental Hygiene' by and large escapes that fate. Zevon has a lot of help from R.E.M. among other stars, though, curoiusly, the album is more reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen in sound. Zevon's husky, smoke-hardened voice is superbly captured, particularly on 'Boom Boom Mancini', though this song is a little repetitive by his standards. The best tracks are probably 'Detox Mansion' (best lyric)and 'Even A Dog Can Shake Hands' (best rock). By contrast, 'Leave My Monkey Alone' is a good song saddled with a plastic arrangement which represents much that's awful about 1980s music.

'Sentimental Hygiene' is nevertheless a fine album overall, probably because Zevon the singer and songwriter is cut from a superior cloth. It's also one of his more disciplined and accessible.
