5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation of Doc's Songs, 23 April 2004
This review is from: Trouble In Mind: The Doc Watson Country Blues Collection (Audio CD)
This is a collection of songs by Doc Watson. It's gleaned from quite a fewother albums. Doc sings and performs in what could be categorised asseveral different styles: blues, old-time, fiddle tunes, gospel and more. This compilation focusses on one particular style: country blues. Somecompilations can feel like they've just been thrown together. This onedoesn't. It feels like someone who actually cares put it together. It'svery representative of his work and it's good and chunky. If you'vealready got lots of Doc's work then maybe there's not likely to be muchnew here. But it might still be worth buying just as a great CD. If you'relooking for a cross section of Doc's work then this is well worth it.There's also a companion 'tunes only' album and together they are a reallygood set.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a gift of music Doc Watson left us., 25 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Trouble In Mind: The Doc Watson Country Blues Collection (Audio CD)
I was so sad when Doc Watson died, but he left behind him the gift of his wonderful music. I never tire of listening to him. It's worth listening to his music and song, and then you may be tempted to buy his discs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Country blues from a master, 8 Nov 2011
This review is from: Trouble In Mind: The Doc Watson Country Blues Collection (Audio CD)
I've had this CD for a while now, and it's been running on my car stereo almost every day. Doc Watson is a very accomplished musician, not only as a guitarist. His singing is very fine, his warm baritone is well suited for the blues, and he yodels just as good as Jimmie Rodgers or Merle Haggard. As a guitar player he has few peers. He has developed his flatpickin' style into an art form, a level of mastery where everything seems or sounds easy, until you try it yourself! There are noe weak tunes on this albums, with a possible exception of Spikedriver blues, which to me sounds a bit too laidback. My favorites at this point are Deep River Blues (masterful picking!), Lost John (shows how good he is on the harmonica, too), Little Sadie (grim murder ballad, which Johnny Cash must have modeled his Cocaine Blues on!). There are others, too, deserving to be mentioned. Buy and listen!
