Aidan cooks up a treat,
By Stephen Cooper (tyldesley, manchester United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: At Home With Aidan Smith (Audio CD)
Aidan Smith has a low-fi sound that mixes jazz, folk, pop and funk. He has reintroduced the long lost sounds of the bontempi organ and the kazoo. His lyrics are often amusing, sometimes confusing but always listen-toable. His one cover version (Sam Cooke's "You really got a hold on me") receives a new light and airy treatment with a nice bit of fairground honky-tonk at the end. "Song to Delia Smith" will make you chuckle and tap your toes at the same time. "Some piece of drab" is a little heavier but hangs around in the memory. Listen to it and enjoy.

Better than Eccles cakes,

First saw aidan at 'this is manchester' - a night of live music/comedy for the italians coming to the champions league final 2003. It rained and not much worked (maybe appropriate) and i never got to see badly drawn boy... but i got something just as good. A 2 song performance from someone called aidan from eccles including one about delia smith. That was enough to find him on the internet and track down his two mini albums. Both absolute genius (although this one probably my favourite) - simple, witty and charming. Seen him since then at Life Cafe and was not at all disappointed (eventually did meet BDB there too). Cant wait for his full-length debut this year.

Refreshingly Different,
By Stephen Cooper (tyldesley, manchester United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

Aidan's first release leaves you wanting to hear more. The lo-fi sound and the use of instruments from a bygone age (Bontempi organ and a kazoo) produce a truly different sound. Some songs are amusing as well as clever - Song to Delia Smith, Some piece of drab. Aidan also gives his quirky treatment to Smokey Robinson's "You've really got a hold on me. June. Go get it. You will enjoy! |
