After a lifetime listening to African American music, new gems emerge regularly so rich is the vein. Recent discoveries include the jazz composer and pianist George Russell, and soul singer James Carr, both marvellous. Carr recorded relatively little, the most productive years being covered by this and two other Goldwax offerings You Got My Mind Messed Up and Singles. Originally an admirer of Otis Redding, many argue that he eventually surpassed the master. For a direct comparison listen to Carr's fantastic version of 'Can't Turn You Loose' on this album and 'These Arms of Mine' on Messed Up.
There is some overlap between the three CDs, alternative takes etc. But with a generous 24 tracks on each who is complaining, and one never tires of 'Dark End Of The Street' anyway! The real McCoy, highly recommended
