4.0 out of 5 stars Northern Promise, 19 May 2003

This Album has shunned the recent preference of many in the music press to heap praise on the new wave of rock. Instead it carves a wonderful blend naivety and vision. The band all under 21 has developed a music sense in isolation from fashion and the result is clear. It takes inspiration from Nick Drake and provides a wonderful antidote to recent rock, while avoiding becoming to shy and reluctant to illustrate their determination. While at times basic it shows wonderful promise for their years and begs the question what will they achieve later if they can accomplish this now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Portrait Of Graet Promise, 27 Jun 2004

On hearing 'Dead July' on B.B.C. 6 Music, I ordered this c.d. straight away, almost on instinct. 'Dead July' is an awesome opener and 'Vena Cava' just adds to the brilliance. Track 3, 'Portrait Of Tuesday'is simply the most wonderful track I've heard for years. Mysterious, sad and haunting with a superbly produced sound to compliment the lyric. There is no let up! ' Looking for Roses' rocks with angst and 'The Royal Way' has a sweet piano solo which warms the soul. 'No Salvation' has resonances of Morrissey-like pessimism. Buy this and hear the finest debut album in 10 years from Berwick's finest.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best new bands!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, 4 Jun 2003
This review is from: Shades Of Black (Audio CD)
"Shades of Black" is an accomplished debut. Lyrically, one could look to such greats as Mo rrissey or Frame. Musically, they cover all bases: punk rock through to the twisted Appalachian country of Oldham and Pajo et al. This is music created in total seclusion; there is no scene; no infrastructure; just them and the rest of the world.
Take a song like "Portrait of Tuesday", it's a little tribute to the Carter Family and "Folsom Prison"-era Johnny Cash." I would say this is the best song on the album! Good work Derek!!!!!!!
Love and loneliness are recurrent themes throughout the LP but all is not 'black''. Although the closer "Hear the Dark" is Black, but it is simple and effective in its message. All songs are written by Eastern Lane, but also by their manager Chris on the last song, who is the leader singer of Del Amtri!!
The songs unwind, contort and fill King Tuts. Derek, a big guy with a big heart on his sleeve, cuts loose with the guitar. His air and demeanour are life-threatening. He carries the music forward like Van the Man's younger brother. Ten songs and it's all over. The battle has been won!
Buy the album!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bright Newcomer, 31 May 2003

Well I brought this album after hearing the single 'dead july' on the radio. The album is a mixture of slow and fast paced tracks giving it a pretty unique sound. It has a slight resemblence of the strokes in places. Not all of the songs are hits but highlights for me are dead july, holy arms, looking for roses, vena cava. This is a good solid debut album from a band who should go on to greater things. Perhaps buy this if your loking to add to an already sized CD collection. This outfit could well soon be big in the indie genre, or a flop, who knows.
