5.0 out of 5 stars A interesting & creepy gem for sceptics and believers alike, 12 July 2003

Never having had the pleasure of watching the satellite TV show "Most haunted" I had no preconceptions (other than those given in the official Amazon review which prompted me to buy)when this DVD dropped through my letterbox - however, I can say that after watching it through twice in less than 24 hrs this really is a splendid documentary for those who have either a serious or passing interest in the subject of ghosts.
The programmes first half is a compilation of several nights spent in reputedly haunted buildings around the UK with the investigators, filmed in an eerie grainy green night-vision, starting off in a jocular mood to seek out the alledged spirits that walk there. However, the hiliarity is soon killed off by some genuinely unsettling and mysterious incidents that have nearly the whole production crew (including the sceptic !) running back the way they came - the look on Yvette Fielding's face in many instances is no "mock horror" for some spoof documentary - this woman is genuinely VERY scared !
Sceptics may find the input from the team's spiritualist medium, Derek Acorah, when he is attempting to converse with the resident ghosts to be a touch theatrical - however, as the programme progresses it becomes more and more apparent that he is uncannily accurate on many points about the history of the buildings & their former occupants. Certainly he is more than capable of sending a shiver down the spine as he alledgedly talks with the Earth-bound spirits - there is an air of genuiness about him that makes it plain that "something" is definately going on...
The highlight of the DVD must be the startling (and unexplained) light phenomena that was captured on the night vision equipment in several of the locations visited (in particular Leven hall which the second half of the documentary is devoted to). Orbs, flashing lights and what look like streamers of glowing material are plainly visible and yet (most disconcerting of all) sometimes not seen by the investigators until after they had viewed their tapes.
Even those people with a mild interest in the subject matter will find this a real treat - just don't watch it alone and with the lights off !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating! You must watch it!, 22 Mar. 2004

This DVD is really fascinating. There is evidence of spiritual activity caught on camera and the crew come across as absolutely genuine - they experience very real fear! Derek Acorah is particularly impressive.... to a sceptic I expect his trance mediumship would appear somewhat theatrical, but I only have admiration for him in having the 'guts' to enter into these haunted locations to communicate with spirits in such a profound way. Being 'possessed', albeit temporarily, can be a very unpleasant experience... this can be seen in Derek when he's sweating and looks unwell. You should watch this DVD because it's an eye-opener - but please remember to watch it with someone else (in the light) and don't scare yourself!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A BRILLIANT show, 13 Oct. 2004

This is a fantastic buy. It includes Derek Acorah getting possesed twice. Yvette Fielding has a strange outburst in the Derby Gaol, orbs, spirits, an hour long special of Levens Hall, things being thrown, a pair of ghostly feet, sadly you can't see them, phew! The list is endless. I recommend you buying it. It really is the Very Best of Most Haunted. Try it, and don't have nightmares!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Most Haunted, 18 Sept. 2003
This review is from: The Very Best Of Most Haunted [DVD] (DVD)
I think this compendium of the best of Series One is excellent value for money. It shows the best parts of the series, including the excellent hour's special at Levens Hall in Cumbria. However it only shows the best parts of the series. Anyone who has just started to follow the series will probably be slightly disapointed with the lack of full episodes.
It does have excellent outtakes which they neglect to show on TV.
A must have for a Most Haunted fan.

I bought this because I don't have Satellite TV and wanted to see some of what I'd been missing. I wasn't disappointed. I think what really makes this work are the performances of Derek Acorah, the medium. Because Most Haunted relies heavily on short stopovers at haunted sites where the ghosts are expected to perform on demand the information that a psycic can reveal is essential. He comes across as genuine and seeing his face when he sees people that others can't is fascinating. As are the scenes where spirits 'take over' his body. If you are a sceptic, you'll probably laugh- I must admit, there were some hammy moments. The Drury lane actor spoke just like the actors that are ridiculed in Black Adder III. One problem with the documentary is it has maybe too many Blairwitch shots of people shot in nightscope panicking and looking scared. The other is, the documentary never goes very deep. No conclusions are drawn and there is scant commentary and analysis. But these limitations can't detract from the fact that this is compelling television that hopefully is playing a part in raising awareness about the supernatural.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Haunted, Most Excellent!, 24 Mar. 2004

As an avid watcher of Most Haunted I can highly recommend this DVD, with a mixture of fear and humour thrown in it's a recipe for success!
With the classic mix of Yvette Fielding and Derek Acorah this show is destined to go far and far and far!
Anyone who thinks they are making it up, see for yourself and then decide. I personally am a full believer and at many points I have jumped out of my skin during this show just like the crew do!
If it is acting then these guys need an oscar!
All I can say is it's well worth it!
