If you are looking for technical perfection and perfect sound don't bother with this release! On the other hand, if you want to hear music making at it's most searching and inspirational, look no further. The composers belong to the classical mainstream - Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, etc - but the performances (all recorded 'live') show a group of performers prepared to take risks and have an excitement and probing profundity the like of which I have never heard before on disc. And what performers! Yehudi Menuhin in his prime. The elderly Casals playing with the vigour of a man half his age. The pianists William Kapell, Horszowski, Istomin, and Clifford Curzon all caught 'on the wing' and sounding wonderful. As final bonuses, there is a truly lovely performance of a Mozart aria by Victoria de Los Angeles, and superb versions of the Mozart Oboe Quartet and Clarinet Quintet.
If you love chamber music this is an essential purchase which will give you a lifetime of pleasure. Be warned though, a second volume is available which is just as good!
