4.0 out of 5 stars None More Noir!
This 3-disc set is a bit of a bargain, including as it does both 'Detour' and 'D.O.A.', two wonderful gems of the genre. The print quality of 'Detour' leaves a little to be desired, being scratched and a bit jumpy in places, but given the age of the film, and the fact that no-one anticipated how timeless it's appeal would prove, it's only to be expected. 'Detour' is a...

3.0 out of 5 stars looks like a bargain
and it is, if you can cope with the truly awful picture quality and total lack of extras. If there had been films in the dark ages, this is what I would have expected them to look like by now. Picture quality of Detour is truly awful, F&F is just about passable, and DOA a little better. F&F not really noir - its Roger Corman being creative with some racing footage...

4.0 out of 5 stars None More Noir!, 13 Mar 2003

This review is from: Film Noir Thrillers: Detour/Fast And The Furious/D.O.A. (Box Set) [DVD] (DVD)
'Detour' is a Road-Noir with a genuinely nightmarish quality. The very apparent back projection lends a surreal edge to the driving sequences, which serve to place the implausible plot twists in a context that makes them seem possible. A classic, 5/5. 'D.O.A.' is nearly as good, with a wonderful opening scene of a man stumbling into a police station to report his own murder - there follows the story in flashback of how he tries to find out who killed him. 4/5. And then there's 'The Fast & The Furious' - not really a Noir, but a mildly entertaining road movie (more of a man-on-the-run/hot-rod exploitation picture) from producer Roger Corman. 2/5. Go buy, and enjoy.

Picture quality of Detour is truly awful, F&F is just about passable, and DOA a little better. F&F not really noir - its Roger Corman being creative with some racing footage. Detour is satisfying, DOA is stand-out - excellent central performance, original plot, fantastic location photography. It has a real sense of menace and genuine noir aesthetic. Definitely worth seeing, but also worth finding a better edition than this, if possible.

2.0 out of 5 stars Film Noir Thrillers, 5 Jan 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Film Noir Thrillers: Detour/Fast And The Furious/D.O.A. (Box Set) [DVD] (DVD)
Given the age of the original prints, the quality of the reproduction is not too bad and the films are watchable from this perspective. From an entertainment perspective the films are definitely B movies and the first person style (of Detour for example) gets tiresome, but that's how these films were.
