a varied selection of ballet excerpts with Fonteyn and Nureyev performing brilliantly. Not too sure about the Valse item - it did go on a bit and whilst the corps de ballet performed well it appeared rather repetitive and there was the temptation to fast forward.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ballet
I have just received this DVD which was promptly despatched . I do feel that request to rate purchases this soon after receipt assumes that DVDS are watched straight away which is not the case always. In any event this was purchased as a present for someone else and I know has definitely not yet been watched. As the end recipient loves the Ballet I don't that it will be...

a varied selection of ballet excerpts with Fonteyn and Nureyev performing brilliantly. Not too sure about the Valse item - it did go on a bit and whilst the corps de ballet performed well it appeared rather repetitive and there was the temptation to fast forward.
The final item from Sleeping Beauty showed the Royal Ballet at its best - sumptuous costumes and scenery, wonderful dancing from Fonteyn and David Blair, and what a remarkable cast list also featuring Merle Park and Antoinette Sibley. Merle Park and David Blair also danced together as Poll and Captain Belaye in Crankos Pineapple Poll which is another dvd treat.
I did notice an error on the dvd jacket credits - it states filming was by Christopher Challis and Geoffrey Unwin - yes, the first ballet was filmed by Challis, but the remaining three were filmed by Geoffrey UNSWORTH, the well respected award winning cinemaphotographer. I also feel the dvd jacket appeared rather cheap looking - a shame.
All in all, an enjoyable selection and I will watch this dvd on many occasions and appreciate the sheer artistry of the soloists and the Royal Ballet.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Slice of History, 14 Nov. 2011

To see Margot Fonteyn dancing her signature role is something special. She had a quality in this role that was particularly special. It was a measure of instinctively knowing what was right at any given moment governed by her innate musicality and line. The extra is seeing all those wonderful dancers from the period now forgotten by all except fans. Mind you those costumes for the male courtiers really do stretch taste.

The DVD also includes Ashton's marvellous LA VALSE, choreographed for the de Gaulle gala, and a very good LES SYLPHIDE in which Fonteyn is magical.

Buy this and enjoy.

This DVD gives me the chance to see Margot Fonteyne and Rudolph Nuryev together, along with the Royal Ballet. I almost stopped breathing. The dancing is exquisite. Mt Christmas present to myself and a good choice.

I love ballet and as I live in a remote part of southern Spain get little chance to see it live, so watching this is a real treat
