5.0 out of 5 stars Australian Upbeat Cowboy Junkies ?
First saw this band at Cambridge folk-festival and was instantly hooked. Refreshingly different and totally honest music. Vocal harmonies, delivered in unashamedly Aussie accents with a wonderful blend of guitar, harmonica and violin. Ok, i know what you're thinking...typical folk band...but that is not the case, try and imagine Aussie version of an upbeat Cowboy Junkies...

3.0 out of 5 stars not their best...
On the strength of 'sink or swim', another waifs album, i bought 'up all night'... and i have to say I was disappointed. Perhaps I haven't given it enough chances, but I've listened a good few times, and it just seems to lack the energy and genuine lyrics of 'sink or swim'.. i reckon aussies away from home will like this, it seems to mostly have been written while they...

Vocal harmonies, delivered in unashamedly Aussie accents with a wonderful blend of guitar, harmonica and violin. Ok, i know what you're thinking...typical folk band...but that is not the case, try and imagine Aussie version of an upbeat Cowboy Junkies and you may get a better picture. Songs laced with sentimentality and nostalgia. "London Still" often brings a tear to the eye and somehow manages to make even a Brit like me feel homesick for Australia! See them live if you get the chance, you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars They should be big big stars, 26 Feb 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Up All Night (Audio CD)
This is my favourite CD at the moment. When I first heard the "Lighthouse" track, I thought they were doing a cover of a standard, but it's their own song. It's hard to label the music - folk-rock or folk-blues I guess. I've no idea why they aren't a massively popular band, because they deserve to be. I would imagine they are great live. Should you buy this CD - YES YES YES.

5.0 out of 5 stars Up all night, 11 May 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Up All Night (Audio CD)
The Waifs most recent and most sophisticated album.
Hard to classify (country? folk? bit of both but neither alone) this is a great album. Hear them live and they're even better (check out their live album, 'A brief history')
My favourite band of the moment. Takes a while to get into this stuff but once you do it'll stick in your head in the best possible way...

Perhaps I haven't given it enough chances, but I've listened a good few times, and it just seems to lack the energy and genuine lyrics of 'sink or swim'.. i reckon aussies away from home will like this, it seems to mostly have been written while they were on tour and homesick, but homesick gets a bit dull after a whole album-full... but 'sink or swim' i do recommend, 'sitting on top of the world' (not sure of official name of the track) is one of the most joyful love songs I've ever heard, and various other tracks are in turn thoughtful, sad, interesting, quirky... topped off with the girls' stunning voices and folky vibe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 6 Dec 2003
This review is from: Up All Night (Audio CD)
Up all Night is a refreshing LP , its neither country nor folk. If you thoguht you didnt like either then buy it and change your mind. The produciton is very clean, but it sounds like al songs were recorded in one take, such is the energy and soul init.
If you aint tapping your toes to lighthouse man, then go and search for some rythm.
Do yerself a favour and buy this, you wont be disappionted.
