5.0 out of 5 stars This was when the Brits knew how to do it!
As one of the greatest British films ever made, Tony Richardson's adaptation of Henry Fielding's classic Tom Jones is long overdue for a full and proper restoration. Shortly before his tragic death from AIDS in 1991, Richardson presided over a personal restoration which included a brand new stereo soundtrack. However, this appeared to be the only real improvement, as the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as ravishing as it was in 1963
Tom Jones has suffered the fate of many a groundbreaking hit film: over the decades it's irreverant tone has been so widely imitated - indeed, almost become de rigeur for period comedies - that much of the novelty has worn off. At the time, Tony Richardson's approach, constantly breaking the fourth wall to confide in or wink to the audience, speeding up sequences and...

5.0 out of 5 stars Still a great film and fun too, 22 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)

First saw this centuries ago when I was 16 and loved it.
Still thoroughly enjoyable - good acting, great caste - even if the lighting etc. isn't up to today's standard.

Good quality DVD. Quick delivery, well packaged.
Reliable seller. Would use this seller again.
Tom Jones an old film but has good memories, and very funny - Hugh Griffiths is definitely the star.
Worth watching by all ages.

Tom Jones is brilliant, the film is as fresh, cheeky, clever and oh so entertaining as it was back in 1963. It has stood the test of time wonderfully, with a cast like Finney, York, Warner, Cilento, Griffith, Dame Edith and Joan Greenwood can't fail. The camera work is fabulous, England has never looked more attractive. A film to enjoy over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Jones, the movie, still crazy after all these years., 27 Feb 2009

We played this classic movie on Valentine's Night and enjoyed seeeing again what a brilliant film it was they and still is today. The filming techniques really make the storytelling come to life, harking back to silent movie days and the modern style of talking to camera, and keep you engaged in the rather corny old Fielding tale. The only thing lacking was the small projected image on our wide screen TV that made for a less cinematic experience and more a TV experience.

The post office managed to keep the DVD in transit for more than a week. It could have made the whole journey on foot quicker.

I bought this dvd some time back having excellent memories of the film. However, my dvd player rejects it as 'format rating not acceptable' i.e. not a universal format. Buyer beware!

4.0 out of 5 stars Frenzied and lustful, 12 Mar 2004

Strange how the memory plays tricks on you. I saw Tony Richardson's film of Fielding's bawdy romp some years ago but for all the frenetic farcical energy with which it is played only one scene sticks in the memory - the one everyone remembers: imagine if you will Albert Finney and Susannah York just married and desperate to disappear to bed in a fit of passionate desire, but first there is the meal to eat, and by gum do they eat - they stuff their mouths frenziedly with lobster, chicken and anything else falling to hand while eyeing each other lustfully. Strangely erotic and funny simultaneously - a classic moment in a film which overall fails to capture the best of Fielding. Enjoy this moment, if nothing else!

A truly classic film, with an amazingly successful and true recovery of the spritely naughtiness ... and moral perception ... of Fielding's novel. We do have first rate actors throughout; Albert Finney and Sussannah Yorke are only two in an outstanding cast (Edith Evans, Joan Greenwood, David Tomlinson, Hugh Griffith ...), while the scene setting has the rings true to the time of the story, without any bombastic over statement. This film deserved all the awards it won. Age shows a little in the colour quality - but no matter. Nice to be offered Hungarian subtitles as well as amusing German dubbing if required!
