5.0 out of 5 stars Howl At The Moon
This is a great film. It has all the right elements of a werewolf movie with the discovery, the horror and the struggle. It has excellent ensemble acting despite the players having rather stereotypical roles (warm-hearted paternal NCO, bastard officer, etc etc). It manages to exactly replicate squaddie humour. Indeed I reckon is has the British Army summed up much as...

3.0 out of 5 stars Bark at the Moon with Dog Soldiers
Dog Soldiers- a low-budget werewolf film that does remarkably well up to a point. The idea of a cottage under siege is very good, as well as the different characters expressing their own personalities clearly. The gore is extensive (This is what resident evil should have looked like) and the werewolves are tall, intimidating and the abscence of a clear view of them...

Indeed I reckon is has the British Army summed up much as Aliens gets close to the US Army; at times one wonders if anti-werewolf warfare isn't part of the training programme. There is gore aplenty. Lots of unpleasant traps from which our heroes must escape and a great ending which you were warned about - but forgot.

A film you'll watch a time or two.

5.0 out of 5 stars There's a bad moon rising............., 31 Dec 2002

This review is from: Dog Soldiers [DVD] [2002] (DVD)
I first went to see this movie one Friday afternoon - I was bored and wanted some entertainment - I wasn't disappointed !
The tagline for the movie is '6 Men, Full moon, no chance !'. The plot is quite simple enough. A group of British soldiers are on a training mission in the Sottish Highlands. They happen across the remains of an SAS unit, whose captain is the only survivor. Whilst on the run from a pack of werewolves, they seek refuge in a deserted farmhouse. With no silver bullets or means of communication with the outside world, what follows is a game of survival - with the werewolves trying to get in and the soldiers trying to stay alive until daybreak.
What makes this film stand out from the bog-standard werewolf movie in the British 'tongue-in-cheek' humour and dialogue. The best one-liners come from Sergeant Wells (hilariously played by Sean Pertwee) who, in one scene, manages to keep his sense of humour intact despite all his vain attempts to keep his guts from falling out of his superglued stomach, following a werewolf attack !
Fans of 'An American Werewolf in London' will love this film as it shares the same mix of horror and black comedy with some really good 'jump out of your seat' scenes.
To sum it up, Dog Soldiers is a gory, scary and very funny Britflick, and proves you don't have to have a big budget to produce a great film

5.0 out of 5 stars why on bluray format only in America?, 21 July 2012

There are enough actual reviews of this wonderful genre film so this is more of a frustrated query - why is this British film, with a British Cast, crew and director and set in Britain, only available on bluray format in America???? All of Neil Marshall's films are available over here on bluray, so why not this one? I really would like to know. I live for the day that the film companies release ALL movies as region free.

5.0 out of 5 stars night of the werewolves?, 12 Sep 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Dog Soldiers [DVD] [2002] (DVD)
ok then so here we have night of the living dead but with werewolves instead of zombies. is that a bad thing? hell no!!!! because this is a decidedly british horror film!!!! ie no budget but great actors and a fantastic script that never takes itself too seriously.
the direction is cracking and makes use of the claustrophobic elements of being trapped in a house overnight.
the basic premise of the plot is that a bunch of squadies are used as bait for some werewolves and make a run for it!!!
the performances are spot on all the way especially kevin mckidd and the moral side of the story and sean pertwee and the sgt.
plus where else will you ever see a squadie have a fist fight with a werewolf and a werewolf getting hit in the face with a frying pan?
you see!!! utter mentalism!!!! thank you soo very much neil marshall!!!!
bring on his next film soon.....please!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Second Only To American Werewolf, 5 Dec 2012
This review is from: Dog Soldiers [DVD] [2002] (DVD)
I love this movie, it's my second favourite werewolf film (American Werewolf In London being my all time favourite).

The wolves in this aren't the most convincing to look at, but it's not the graphics and costumes that make the movie - it's the amazing acting and the hilarity of it all.

The references are brilliant, the characters are convincing, there's action and betrayal; this movie will keep you laughing all the way through it. Although hiking and camping alone or in small groups may be something you'll never want to do after watching!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ten years on...Still the best !, 5 July 2012
By
Joseph "6" (Palermo, Sicily) - See all my reviews

This is a fantastic British horror movie. The main three actors are among the finest stars to shine in the English film industry, and are able to deliver totally convincing performances as soldiers and victims of a scottish werewolf rampage. This movie was shot with a low budget, but the special effects are still scary and believable even in comparison to more recent productions. You will like it if you are into horror stories, as there is constant tension, scares and gore to satisfy anyone. You will like it if you are into horror comedies, as there is plenty of humour; you will like it if you are into brit flicks, as this is so full of british character and humour. Hell, you will like it if you like movies !!
