This review is from: 'Those Dreaming Years' (Audio CD)
Anything by or about Novello fascinates me. I just remember this superstar of our British past dying, and what a major event it was to the grieving crowds in this country. I remembered all these years some of the songs from his wonderful last musical King's Rhapsody in which he was still starring only a few hours before he died. The centenary of his birth brought out many CDs of his music which allowed me to start collecting his music. The major problem with all these collections is they mostly repeat the same most famous songs and you have to buy nearly all of them to pick up the one or perhaps two if you are lucky that you don't already have.

I play his music over and over, it never bores me, I never tire of it. No wonder he was so amazingly popular. It's a tragedy this great man's musicals aren't played these days with the very rare exception of themost famous, The Dancing Years. There is a quite good movie of King's Rhapsody, but unfortunately Errol Flynn was way past his best. But better than nothing.

Why is it that Novello, hugely popular charismatic man, film and stage actor (starring movies so famous in their day and still now immensely enjoyable when you can get hold of a copy but notably the famous Hitchcock - and fascinating - movie The Lodger), matinee idol, playwright and musician, indeed genius, greatly adored in his time and famed for being one of the nicest people you could ever meet with no conceit whatsoever and a welcome and kind word for everyone, with after all his other work 7 amazing major musicals to his name that in their day were more successful than anything from Broadway and in most of which he starred too, is ignored in this country, has been for many years when his music rivals anything from Hollywood or Broadway and is/was better than Coward who still gets massive praise? So many of his songs you'll know, they endure even if people have forgotten who composed them. See Gosford Park movie for some of his songs used in the soundtrack and Jeremy Northam splendidly acting Novello - one of the story's characters.
