5.0 out of 5 stars THE essential jazz trumpet album of the year, 22 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Platypus (Audio CD)
Gerard Presencer's debut album has hit with virtuosity. Gerard writes a style that cannot be catagorized into a genre - which is contempory but does not sacrifice listening appeal to 'cleverness'. His playing is not only pleasing to the ear, but also incredibly inventive - he is not restricted by any boundaries or scales, using the trumpet to its very full potential. The standard of his band is also very high - musicians on Rhodes Piano, guitar, bass and drums do not fail to complement his playing. If you crossed Chet Baker and Chick Corea you might get a similar feel, but it would still be a long way off his unique style and calibre. Highly recommended.

These are the guys who quietly do session work on all those smash hit tunes that get played for years and years - tunes by US2, Incognito, Sting, Zero 7 to name a few. This is the music they really want to play. The result is some brilliant original grooves, fantastic collective improvisation and funky, twisty compositions that are bang up to date. I love the first track the most and have been known to play it 5 times back to back!

I was introduced to Gerard by a friend and i have to say i liked it straight away. This funky sounding album is both original and contemporary. The compositions are highly inovative and enetertaining. I particularly enjoyed "Blue Eyed Boy" which was very cool. Great Jazz
