This review is from: Lully - L'Orchestre du Roi Soleil - Symphonies, Ouvertures & Airs jouer (Audio CD)
I confess that I find quite a lot of the Lully I have heard on disc to be a little laboured and over-courtly, but this excellent disc from Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations is an unalloyed delight from beginning to end. It consists of Suites compiled from some of Lully's works for the court of Louis XIV and it is packed with melody, harmonic invention and a wonderful range and variety of styles and instrumental colour.

What makes it really special is the playing of the ensemble. Savall judges the mood and tempo of every movement beautifully. There is terrific verve in the dancing and military movements, and the slower movements are very beautiful and often genuinely affecting. Savall has made dozens of really good recordings but I think his is one of his best - which is really saying something.

The recorded sound is excellent, the presentation is of Alia Vox's usual beautiful standard and the notes full and interesting. It's a really terrific disc all round and very warmly recommended to anyone with even the smallest interest in music of this period.

This review is from: Lully - L'Orchestre du Roi Soleil - Symphonies, Ouvertures & Airs jouer (Audio CD)
I have quite a few cds in my collection of music, particularly early or rather obscure music, performed by ensembles under Jordi Savall. This is one that has particular pride of place in the collection. The music of Lully, like that of Rameau, is in my view, timeless - it has an eternal beauty and lyricism that few other composers could ever match. So to have a cd which incorporates three suites of music by Lully is a great find.

The music is from:
Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme (1670)
Le Divertiseement Royal (1664-1670)
Alceste (1674)
Chaconne de l'Amour medecin (1665)

This music is absolutely wonderful - the Marche pour la Ceremonie turque from Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme is one of those pieces of music that you just absolutely have to turn up loud and enjoy to the full. This whole cd, beautifully played by Le Concert des Nations is totally well worth getting hold of. They have done, as always, a fantastic job in the presentation and performance of the music, and the cd itself, with great photos, and a very informative booklet is well worth having in the collection. Lully - check. Le Concert des Nations under Jordi Savall - check. Brilliant.
