5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime, 6 Feb 2011

This review is from: Byrd: Cantiones sacrae 1589; Propers for the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Audio CD)
I would need a thesaurus of superlatives to lavish enough praise on this marvellous recording of some of the most sublime music ever written, but no words can express the feelings this music releases. If you love Byrd, you will love this recording, and if you have been wondering where to start with him, I'd recommend here.

I am collecting all of the CDs in this series. They are very well recorded, the choice of vocal ranges, transpositions, etc is very well thought out. I very highly recommend this cd and the rest of the collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars stunnning music, 1 May 2014
This review is from: Byrd: Cantiones sacrae 1589; Propers for the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Audio CD)
excellent listening piece that is appreciated when you are in the right mood. It is historical music written at a time of great religious upheaval and turmoil and yet loyal to England's Catholic past in its dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Stephen R Johnson

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure genius !, 23 Mar 2014

The excellent notes put the music into the political and religious context of the late sixteenth century giving the listener a better understanding of these masterpieces. The growing fear of a European Catholic coalition to invade England and the Catholic plots centered around Mary Queen of Scots lead to a "clamp down" on English Catholics. The texts and emotions expressed in the music mirror the torment of the Catholic Byrd at the time.
As with all masterpieces different levels of interpretation are possible. As a keen amateur I would summarize as follows.
Beautiful, heavenly music, magnificent singing, a clear professional recording at a giveaway price. In modern parlance a "no-brainer".
Buy it. You will never tire of this music.
