This is a perfectly decent collection of Christmas carols. Most of the favourites are here plus a few more unusual items. They are all very well sung, although the Worcester Cathedral Choir trebles sound rather strained in the descants to 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing' and 'O Come All Ye Faithful'. The best singing comes in the three items performed by the Elora Festival Singers from Canada. The greatest enthusiasm is found in the single item performed by Oxford Camerata, the appropriately vigorous mediaeval hymn 'Gaudete Christus est natus'. The main problem with the collection is the lack of such enthusiasm and any degree of spirit in most of the performances by the cathedral and abbey choirs, they are so restrained that they seem completely detached. For example the Worcester Cathedral Choir give fairly dull performances of two of the most jubilant of carols ' Joy to the World' and 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing'. The real Spirit in this collection is within the absolutely beautiful performances from the Elora Festival Singers. All three of their items are wonderfully sung but they give an especially lovely performance of Elizabeth Poston's 'Jesus Christ the Apple Tree'. They also sing the beautiful Harold Darke setting of 'In the bleak midwinter' rather than the equally excellent but more austere tune by Gustav Holst which is mentioned in the CD booklet and which is the one usually sung by church congregations in England.

Please note that the Amazon.co.uk review given in the product description section does not relate to this CD, it has obviously been included by mistake. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir are not included in this CD at all.
The brief review which follows it is about this CD.

There are no defects on my copy of this disc, such as are described by a more recent reviewer. Every carol is complete and all opening notes and words are present. 'Gaudete Christus est natus' begins clearly with the word Gaudete. This carol and some of the others are unaccompanied or have unaccompanied openings and so it is possible to miss the opening word or syllable if the volume is set too low.

Not having many CDs of carols I found I was missing them this year.
I have loads of tape and 33's but these need constant attention as they only last half an hour. The shops seem to have tacky versions mainly, and I found this CD to be the purfect antidote as it is all full blooded 'CHOIR' sung carols as they should be as of olden times. (When I was a kid)
Good as background music if wanted, but I found myself joining in with many of them throughout the CD.
A good strong traditional carol CD well worth the cost. Happy next Christmas.
Yetti.

The carols are lovely but not as beautifully sung as the other CD I bought by Kings College. Also rather a lot of overlap in songs. I was disappointed that neither had "Silent Night" on it. However, easy listening.

I love the songs on this CD but the sound is very quiet and as it is choral it is difficult to hear the lyrics. Beautiful singing but I was looking for somehting a little more lively. Very relaxing though.

Though this wasn't ordered for Christmas, I have been playing it in the car regardless, I love it not only are there some of the usual ones there are some I remember singing years ago at primary school, it is great at stirring the emotions, I shall look forward to playing it properly this Christmas.

Firstly, the Amazon review above bears no relation to this recording. This Nexos release is a compilation of carols from four previous releases on the same label. Featuring four cathedral choirs, some with organ accompaniment, they are of a very high standard, BUT, frequently ruined by the first note of the carol being missing. For example "Gaudete" becomes "...Dete". Really shoddy transfer, as I doubt the original recordings demonstrated this trait. So beautiful but flawed. AVOID..

EDIT: Dec 24
It would seem I am in receipt of a faulty copy of this disc. This is a set of really beautifully performed carols and in that respect can only be very highly recommended.
