4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive homegrown, 13 Nov 2002

This review is from: Its All Happening Now (Audio CD)
I absolutely loved his last album Masquerades and Siluettes, so I bought this on sight. It didn't disappoint. What's noticable is that Lewis has developed all areas of production and rapping while not breaking entirely with his previous sound. A long album of 23 tracks, they can't all hit the spot, but at times the production reminds me of DJ Premier or Evil Dee on Smif 'n' Wessun's first album. Dreamy jazz and beautifully worked sampling with beats that just make your head nod.
There are several stand out tracks for me on the album "City Expanse" most clearly highlights Lewis' development and his style of rapping (though not the content of his lyrics) reminds me of Mobb Deep on The Infamous album. "Mums the word" is just incredible for its laidback lushness and "No Escape" is also a track you're sure to put on repeat.
Despite pushing the envelope on his rapping style he maintains his spiritual outlook rapping "All I really know is life ain't about money" on "Sunny Dedications"- refreshing anathema to the commercial pap which sells as hip hop these days. Keeping up with the UK scene these days reminds me of when I first started buying Hip hop when there were fewer albums and they were harder to find but nearly every album was a gem with original outlooks and fresh surprising and above all slamming beats. What we've got here is very different to Roots Manuva and Blak Twang and all those other artists pushing the UK style. Lewis has created an album true to the basic essentials of hip hop yet in no way a reguritation of what's gone before.
"The Chase" features Blade and one of the phattest drum beats this year- a blinding team up of rappers with very different styles but surprisingly similar outlooks. Jehst also cameos to stunning effect on "Communications" with an incredible verse of techno blues. That said, not all the collaborations work to such good effect and Profound's verse on "Sunny Decications" doesn't quite hit the spot, and Supa T doesn't turn in anything like the incredible verse he did on the previous album. The beats and cuts and wonderful throughout and will please any rap/ hiphop fan from wherever- satisfying stuff!

I got this the day it came out, and it has been well worth the wait. The album is varied, with a variety of different beats but this just keeps it sounding fresh, the rhymes are good and lewis comes up with some good lyrics. Plenty of tracks and skitz, plus a number of guests, Blade, Jehst (Bad Boy), Klashnikoff and more. You just cannot go wrong. I love UK-HipHop right now and this is another top album.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb offering from one of the best producers in the UK, 26 Oct 2005

I first heard of Lewis Parker after listening to Jehsts Falling Down LP (also quality) and was very impressed with his style of production and flow. So when I found out he had an LP, I snapped it up immediatly, and on first listen I enjoyed the diversity of the beats, from the bassy seasons of espionage to the laid back, mellow rhythems of sunny dedications. I needed to listen to it three or four times to totally appreciate how good the instrumentals are, and you can tell Parker has put a large amount of work in to make this an excellent listen. Fortunately, he can rap a bit as well which lifts him above being a normal producer, and he is assisted by a wealth of guest appearences including Klashnekoff & Skriblah of Terra Firma, Blade, A-Cyde and members of the former champions of nature group, Supa T, Apollo and the Uber talented Jehst. There are a few problems, there are too many skits, some of the verses are weak (Profound - sunny dedications to name one) and some tracks sound a bit too similar, but these are tiny problems on an overly excellent album and anyone into uk hip hop who is looking for something different to the usual cack thats released will enjoy this. You won't be dissapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars UK Benchmark, 17 July 2007
This review is from: Its All Happening Now (Audio CD)
Under-rated on its release due to a shift away from the highly regarded styles displayed on 'Masquerades and Silhouettes', 'Happening Now' has, in retrospect, become the exclamation point on a rich period in British Hip-Hop's evolution. With Skinnyman's album, and well developed projects by the likes of Universal Soldiers being notable exceptions, the lyricism and beats on display here set a benchmark yet to be surpassed by anyone in the field.

Shadowed by the disintegration of the highly skilled Champions of Nature crew, Lewis Parker inspires razor-sharp, no holds barred, lyrical performances from Supa T, Jehst, Apollo, Profound, A Cyde, and UK stalwart Blade, before giving a platform to Skribblah and Klashnekoff from Terra Firma, who release some of their darkest sermons to date on the mighty and mournful finale 'No Escape'.

If Virgin/Melankolic could have nurtured the talent on show here more effectively perhaps this would have reached a wider audience; as it stands a slept-on classic in recent British musical history and a snapshot of living in this country in the 90s/2000s, developed and processed with unrivalled digital clarity.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent example of UK rap, 5 Nov 2002

This review is from: Its All Happening Now (Audio CD)
I'm impressed, and actually grateful to get to express my thoughts on this album. "It's all happening now" is an album that Lewis Parker should most definitely be proud of.
This album is jam packed with breaks and samples, put together brilliantly as a back-drop for some inspiring rap. No, none of that usual player and pimp mentality that your bombarded with these days. This work even makes Jeru the Damaja sound commercial. It's a relief to listen to some unpretentious rap, there's no doubt as to where this talent comes from. I even caught myself smiling at some of the reference made to an upbringing I can relate to.
Versatile music, you can either blare it out to get the heart pumping, or just chill. It should be in everyone's collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great MCing over AMAZING beats!, 12 Dec 2003

This review is from: Its All Happening Now (Audio CD)
It is currently the golden age of UK Hip Hop in my opinion, what with masterpieces by Jehst, Braintax and Lewis Parker being released in the last couple of years. 'It's All Happening Now', along with Jehst's 'Falling Down', is the finest British rap album you can buy. Lewis Parker shows off his sturdy flow and well constructed lyrics proving himself to be an impressive MC, but it's his production skills alone that makes this album essential listening. Let me just say that you would be hard pushed to find an album in the WHOLE of hip-hop with better beats than what can be heard on this one, and Lewis Parker produced them ALL himself. The funky, jazzy styles of tracks like 'Incognito' and 'Golden Sound' absolutely rip Pete Rock's beats and the melody of 'Sunny Dedications' is just something sacred; if your idea of good hip-hop is laidback grooves, then this is the PERFECT BEAT! A bold statement, but it's true. Lewis Parker is a gifted MC, but that is besides the point, as a producer he is one of a kind and cruelly ignored by true hip hop fans who think DJ Premier is the God of beats (but I do respect Premier, he makes fat beats too). If you like hip-hop you MUST. BUY. THIS. ALBUM. IMMEDIATELY. Make that YESTERDAY!! 'IT'S ALL HAPPENING NOW'!
