5.0 out of 5 stars demonic sound!, 8 July 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Demon Hunter (Audio CD)
demon hunter are a cross between black metal and nu metal which means they are at times heavy, and at times not so heavy. but don't let that throw you, the sound is like no other, they use growling vocals and ordinary vocals, so if you want something heavy, but not too heavy and you think slipknot is you're answer then you are so so wrong. this won't come out of your cd player for a long time, buy this album or you WILL regret it, go on, you know you want to.....

Demon Hunter's debut may have sounded akin to the far more popular Slipknot or Killswitch Engage at the time of its release in 2002, but the quality that is evident here has not only continued across all of their subsequent albums (5 at time of writing - 2012 - and soon to be 6) but also been bettered on almost every occassion. It is fair to say that you usually know what to expect from a Demon Hunter album but it is only also fair to note that they have yet to release a 'bad' one. And thei debut is no exception. Yes, there are better DH albums (Summer of Darkness, Triptych and Storm the Gates of Hell) but any are worthy additions to the metalcore genre, as well as metal in general, despite whether you are a christian or not.

'Screams...' is a good opening albeit not an outstanding one. It sets the template of scream/riff/breakdown/soaring chorus well, but compared to a lot that fit this template on their next release, it pales. 'I Have Seen...' is an angry little insert that has an infectious, industrial-metal riff. Again this is indicative of a lot of their more aggressive tracks, 'Storm the Gates of Hell' being a more perfect example of where they got the right balance between aggression and melody. 'Infected' is a mini classic and the first truly great track on the album. A superb, understated chorus (they're very good at those). 'My Throat...' is another new statement of intent. DH are also very good at doing heavy, dark ballads and this is their first. And it's a fantastic tracks, a grower but fantastic. 'Through the Black' has a heavy feel and a rousing chorus.

'Turn your Back...' is good but not outstanding. 'And the Sky...' is a 20 second interlude of horses charging. 'As We Wept' is probably my least favourite track. It's not bad, just quite uninteresting. 'A Broken Upper Hand' is better with another great chorus. 'The Gauntlet' is another of their great ballads and ends the proceedings on a sombre high.

An excellent debut that was bettered by Summer of Darkness, then Triptych, then Storm the Gates of Hell. But there's no good place to start with DH as all of their albums are of such a consistently high standard. Here's to them getting more recognition with album no 6...

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, 10 Nov. 2005
This review is from: Demon Hunter (Audio CD)
Demonhunter's debut album is fantastic. Admitidley, they initialy look and sound like slipknot other foul mouthed rubbish band. On deeper inspection though (and listening to the CD) I was hooked! Nice clean vocals (no swearing), brilliant instrumental works. Great for the hardcore christian rocker and everyother rocker.

This is an awesome album. I listen to it almost every day. Lots of variety in the songs. I think Demon Hunter is my favourite band now. If you like Demon Hunter, I suggest checking out Trivium, my other favourite band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this album........, 7 Feb. 2003
This review is from: Demon Hunter (Audio CD)
WOW! Demon Hunter are a Christian Metal band from the USA. The album is a mix of heavy riffs, eerie bass and awesome drums which creates some of the best Black/NuMetal i've ever heard. However what makes DH stand out in particular are the vocals that are pure Metal but mixed with normal 'singing' (both styles are done excellently). If you like Knot then put that down and listen to this.... 5 times heavier and 10 times better!
Demon Hunter deserve to make it big over here so buy a copy you wont regret it....
Tom
