This review is from: The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin: The Complete Second Series [DVD] (DVD)
The second series continues directly from where the first series left off. Following Reggie's fake suicide, he decides to reveal his true identity to Elizabeth and then is sacked by C.J. He then goes to get a job at a pig farm while Elizabeth gets a job at 'Sunshine Desserts' (C.J.'s business) but doesn't tell Reggie. In the third episode of the series, Reggie has a brilliant idea, resigns from the pig farm and opens a useless shop called 'Grot' which openly sells rubbish. Deep down, Reggie wants this to be a failure but success comes his way and 'Grot' expands rapidly. Reggie hates his new chain of shops because his life is now the same as it was when he worked at Sunshine Desserts. In a desperate plan to bring down the company, he employs totally unsuitable people but even this fails when the shop becomes EVEN more successful! Reggie decides there is only one thing to do to get rid of his life of misery!

5.0 out of 5 stars An astonishing second series, 1 Dec 2007

After the wonderful opening series of this show it must have seemed near impossible that David Nobbs could improve upon it but improve upon it he did.

The idea of Reginald Perrin forming his own company to sell rubbish is perfectly in keeping with the character and beautifully written. This concept makes the series not only very funny but also fun and the performances are once again near faultless.

The fact that success still cannot bring true satisfaction also feels right and this series is as good as sitcom can get.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring back the 70s, 19 Nov 2003

This review is from: The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin: The Complete Second Series [DVD] (DVD)
OK, so there are very few extras with this DVD, but do you do get seven whole episodes of Leonard Rossiter on the top of his form as the fantastic, iconoclastic Reggie Perrin. Rossiter's performance is a delight, by turns ridiculous, uproarious and touching. He is supported by a strong cast of eccentrics and rogues, including his boss, the marvellous CJ ("I didn't get where I am today...."), and his irksome son-in-law Tom, who provides unending and undrinkable supplies of prune wine.
While there are some moments which seem dated, on the whole this series has lost little of its charm, and David Nobbs' scripts seem particularly strong when compared many of the insipid mainstream sitcoms produced nowadays. This second series is probably not quite as funny as the first, but nonetheless is of exceptionally high quality.
I didn't get where I am today without recognising a classic when I see one.

Both CDs (Series 2 & 3) arrived in quick succession and I was entirely satisfied with the sender's care and attention to my needs. Seeing that these series get few , if any, repeats on the box, I have greater reason for treasuring them.
