5.0 out of 5 stars Judy Garland Never Sounded Better!!!, 5 Jun 2003

I have many recordings of Judy Garland from the Capitol Years, but this is in my opinion, 'One of Capitol's Best Albums' featuring this Legendary Performer!!! The sound quality is Excellent throughout, on the Studio Recordings as well as on the Great Live Performances! You would swear Miss Garland rose from the great beyond just to make these truly Spectacular Recording Performances!! Her voice sounds so clear and pure throughout all these Wonderful Songs!!

Also, the more rare Garland Songs included in this album are Simply Great! Such as the following, "I'm Old Fashioned", "Then You've Never Been Blue", "It's So Lovely To Be Back Again In London", "Purple People Eater", and "Comes Once In A Lifetime."-All these songs are Superb!!

Furthermore, the Band and Orchestra accompaniment that were carefully selected for this very Talented Artist Judy Garland, sound so Surprising Modern, it is Truly Amazing, and a Real Treat to Behold!

This Two CD Collection of "Judy at the Top of her Form" is ONE ALBUM that I'll be listening to over and over again, with a True Admiration and Pure Enjoyment!!

Yes, I do regard this album Very Highly! So I Strongly Recommend It, as a MUST for all Garland Fans, and for people who just want to experience 'Excellent Singing' in general!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This classic IS a classic!, 24 Mar 2003

A wonderful collection of Judy's recordings from Capitol Records covering 1955-1965 and including both American and British studio tracks and live concert recordings as well. Most have been "lifted" from her various Capitol albums, though according to the sleeve notes, some are previously unissued on CD. (Someone much more expert than I will be able to say if this is true or not, no doubt). The recording quality is A1 and it must stand as a lasting testament to the original engineers that such great recordings from a fantastically iconic artist can be heard in their full glory 40 to 50 years after they were made. Classic songs, classic arrangements and orchestras too (Jenkins, Riddle etc.). And Judy? Well, just great! A must I think.

5.0 out of 5 stars over the rainbow, 27 Feb 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Classic Judy Garland: the Capitol Years (Audio CD)
Judy opens this fantastic collection with her signature tune 'Over the Rainbow', singing with the raw emotion with which she delivers every song. The collection is made up of her later works and although some argue that her voice has become tired and worn, I believe this is Judy at her best, singing with years of experience behind her, really showing the wide range the woman had. A truly wonderful collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, 16 May 2003
This review is from: Classic Judy Garland: the Capitol Years (Audio CD)
This album is absolutly the best! Judy shines. Her voice cuts deep into you. When she laughs, it's so infectious that you have to join in, even if you don't know what she's laughing at!
Fantastic songs, plus ones that haven't been released on CD before, including the hilarious "Purple People Eater". A must buy for anyone, not just Judy fans.

This 1989 16 track compilation produced by the late Alan Dell has lost none of its impact during the following 25 years. This is some of the best that Capitol recorded, (Nelson Riddle; Hal Mooney; Jack Marshall, Conrad Salinger) along with some of the London sessions of August 1960 (Norrie Paramor, MD).
There were some great ballads that were originally on her 1962 LP "The Garland Touch" and one these is a highlight of the compilation for me. The song is Cole Porter's " Do I Love You" with the Nelson Riddle orchestra.
Of the up tempo songs "Come Rain or Come Shine" has to be the standout from the Norrie Paramor sessions.
For pure nostalgia, you cannot beat the "Judy at The Palace"medley. The Hal Mooney arrangement is magical conjuring up days of vaudeville.
Alan Dell was clever in assembling such a mix of well known songs and things you might have forgotten all top quality performances.
The running time is approx 59 minutes which was a good length of time back in 1989. This was part of a series of label releases that Alan produced and which can still be bought today.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate pleasure!, 21 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Classic Judy Garland: the Capitol Years (Audio CD)
They say, that the best event in the history of the show business is Judy's concert at Carnegie Hall. And yes, I have that CD and thought it would be enough to understand the full power of her talent.
Well, I was wrong.
This "Capitol Years" CD is the ultimate breath-taking pleasure from the first to the last sound. Studio and live recordings, choice of songs for this CD, best of the best takes...

Long story short: if you are a real Judy Garland's fan, there are only 3 albums you MUST have (and on CD, not downloaded online): this "Capitol Years" album, "Live at Carnegie Hall" and "Live in London Palladium with Liza Minnelli".
