3.0 out of 5 stars hmmmmmmmm
I was a massive fan of the first Halo! The game had an interesting plot, innovative weapons and great dialogue. To say I was looking forward to Halo 2 would be an understatement!

Halo 2 was a big dissapointment, I know a sequal has a lot to live up to when it has to follow a game as complete as Halo Combat Evolved. But even so...

From the outset I it just didn't...

Whoever on this earth doesn't have HALO 2 don't know what there missing. It is the best video game EVER made. The fast pace shooting action is thrilling and exciting. The storyline is dark and complex, with many twists and turns. The characters are diverse with the Master Chief, clad in green SPARTAN MARK V armour, the coolest and most awesome video game character. The Arbiter a troubled, duty filled ELITE who can turn invisible and silently exstinguish his enemies with his deadly energy sword. The enemies are tough and smart especially on difficulter level settings. With the alien races of Grunts, Jackals, Elites, Hunters, Brutes and Drones. Along with some forerunner sentinels and the divulged, sickly looking Flood. The weapons at your disposal are many from human rifles, rocket launchers and shotguns to alien sniper rifles, plasma guns and sticky grenades. Commandear vehicles like Warthogs, Ghosts, Wraiths, Scorpions, Banshees and Spectres, each with its own unique firepower and manuverabiliy. There are many levels to finish with hardcore FPS action. And if not all thats enough the multiplayer is SO AWESOME. Battling out against friends on FFA matches or working together in Team Games. You can split screen, system link or even test your skills to their fullest on Xbox live the best internet gaming thing ever. So if your reading this and you don't already have Halo 2 or 1 then get out there and buy it. Believe me if First Person Shooters are your favourite video game types then Halo will seem like a gift from god hence the title 'Halo'which is a ring weapon. So please don't waste time, please buy it

4.0 out of 5 stars More of the same from Bungie..., 18 Nov 2004
The original Halo game was a groundbreaking installment in videogame history, casting a shadow over all other first person shooters to date. The much-hyped sequel is no exception.

Halo 2 is basically a tarted up version of its predecessor - no more no less. The graphics are smoother and the sound is more atmospheric, yet in both cases they are near identical copies of the original character designs and soundtrack. You can play as a covenant elite in single and multiplayer, but there is no real difference to playing as the master chief. Its the same old first person gameplay at the end of the day. Oh, except you can turn invisible for 5 seconds instead of having a flashlight. Id say 85% of the game has been seen and done before in the orignal.

But to be fair, if you had never played Halo 1 before (problem: who hasn't...), then Halo 2 would leave you speechless for a month after five minutes of the rich scenery and classic gameplay. The scale of some of the battlefields in the sequel is something yet to be seen in any other video game. Think of the epic battle scenes in the first game and multiply. The detail and sheer size of some of the environments truly exhibits the XBOX's claim to the title King of the Consoles. Aint no way a PS2 could cope with some of the stuff witnessed here.

There are also nearly twice as many weapons and some imaginative new enemies with which to tango. As a result, even if you have played Halo before, there are a few new tricks and tactics you will need to develop to get through. As a veteran of the first game, having completed it on the most difficult setting, I started Halo 2 not on normal but one grade higher (heroic), but still managed to finish it within a week. Probably about 25-30hrs gamplay all in all.

The one and only fault with Halo 2 is that it is too much like its Pops. The four star rating above is an average of two marks. Five stars (and beyond) if you have not played Halo 1, three stars if you have. Either way, however, you will not be disappointed, and there is also a whole world of multiplayer to discover and extend the lifespan of this very accomplished and technologically advanced game.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHY?, 2 Aug 2006
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Why did they have to make this game so damn addictive and great?
This is indeed one of, if not the best game ever and definitely the best on the current generation of games. Now I got my Xbox the same time as halo 2 came out, but I wasn't really into it, it didn't look like anything special and I really didn't like the first one (just cause I sucked at it). So lets fast forward to summer 2005, at this point I had played halo 2 and thought it was alright, I even borrowed it off a mate and completed it. It wasn't until I actually brought my own copy that I realised it's an amazing piece of artwork and story plotting, then I fell in love with it. I completed it on easy (don't laugh), normal, heroic and then the good old fashion legendary, and after I did that, I became a halo god. The great thing about this game is the multiplayer, many people slate it because it hasn't got any bots or any AI to go up against and to be honest I'm glad. There's nothing worse then being killed by an AI or seeing you AI team mates stuck on a piece of scenery then someone throwing a grenade into them and gaining 10 points. The multiplayer levels are amazing (good old revamped Blood Gulch) and the changes you can do to modes is pretty cool (I made the best thing ever: Halo Derby and Halo Racing), I must admit that the multiplayer isn't as good with four people as it is with 8-16 people, but its still good fun.
If you have a lot of mates who have Xboxes and a copy of halo 2 then you need this game, but if you don't its still a great game to own and defiantly one to have in your collection, there's nothing like nothing a `sticky' grenade onto a grunts head and see it run into it's mates to get it off, bliss.

5.0 out of 5 stars The battle for 'Halo 2' has begun..., 17 Nov 2004
By T. Walters (London, England.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Why is everyone moaning and groaning about how 'Halo 2' is such a disappointment? I'm not going to go into the explicit criticisms that many have made, as everyone is entitled to their own subjective opinions. I just feel a little angry that their views are spoiling it for the rest of us. Much like the majority, I absolutely marvelled at the brilliance of 'Halo'. Not just because of the gameplay and look but, for its relative storyline, atmosphere and, some may argue, shear originality. It was how all these elements were put together that made it so great, and that is why I believe that 'Halo 2' to be just as great.

Okay, I can admit that it is different to 'Halo' in many ways. The most obvious being the raised level of graphics, sound and, in my opinion, gameplay. Isn't that good thing? There is more weapons and vehicles to use, and most importantly ALL vehicles can slowly get damaged, and blow up (and that includes warthogs and tanks). Besides from the usual set of vehicles, there are new additions, particularly on the Covenant's side, which I wont mention, hence spoil it for you.

The most profound difference between the first 'Halo' and 'Halo 2' is the storyline. In 'Halo' it was more mystery, discovery and exploration which had added to its greatness. However, with 'Halo 2' it goes deeper into what the Covenant is all about. It takes you through a journey to the very heart of the Covenant, and how it is structured, organised, and ruled. The battleground is no longer restrictive and small, but vast, mirroring how big the 'Covenant-Earth War' really is. There are also a good few surprises when it comes to mission, which, again I won't spoil for you.

'Halo' and 'Halo 2' are not separate games but one. You cannot compare and contrast what they are. 'Halo 2' is a success, worthy of recognition as a success. Please don't let the minority destroy the magic that is 'Halo'. Write down your opinions for all to see. To prove that there are people out there who do have vision and understanding, and not corrupted by narrow-mindedness.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic online experience. A forgettable offline one., 15 Sep 2005
By jimbob (ireland) - See all my reviews
Halo 2 has been around for about 10 months now and it is still one of the most popular online games, so I don't think i'll have to make any comments on the longevity or replay value of this title.

I'm not going to waste your time with overly elegant words or sentences. I want to tell you about Halo 2. You want a concise, to the point review. No nonsense. You don't come onto amazon customer reviews wanting a gramatically perfect, professional review, you come here to hear what other people think of the game and if the opinion of your fellow gamers is positive enough to warrant you spending money on this game.
So lets launch right into it.

Graphics: 9/10
Visually this game is astounding. Everything looks so detailed. You can tell that Bungie put alot of work into making this game pleasing to the eye. Each pixel is better than the last and you may find it hard not to stop obliterating alien armies and stare in sheer amazement at what you are seeing.
But I think I know what you want from a review, you want be sure this game is worth your forking over your hard earned 10 quid for. The graphics aren't going to be what will stop you buying it. Trust me.
It's more beautiful than Julia Roberts riding a unicorn.

Sound:10/10
Immensely thrilling soundtrack. Awesome rock guitar riffs mixed with large, thundering drums is the perfect music for this game. Turn it up loud.
As for the sound effects, there's little fault I can find in them. The sound of bullets zipping past your head is scarily realistic and hearing an alien come roaring at you with what can only be described as hell in a gun shaped box.
Sounds great. Sorted.

Gameplay(Offline): 6/10
This is the only let down of this game, the singleplayer action.
For those of you who played/made sweet love to the first Halo will know that following it was never going to be an easy job. Halo was an exhilarating offline gaming experience and it is still one of the greatest FPSes of all time.
Unfortunately, Halo 2 does not carry on with this offline perfection. The gameplay in the offline section of Halo 2 is pretty damn shoddy compared to Halo.
It feels empty, repetitive, confusing and sometimes it's just plain ridiculous.
Game starts off fine. Storyline and gameplay is looking good, your getting into your spartan groove and your well into your first couple of hours. Then, for some reason, you assume the control of an exiled covenant elite. The very thing you want to kill so much. I purposefully jumped into the ocean several times just to make it feel like i'm wasting an elite.
I for one certainly did not wish to see the war through the eyes of the covenant. It made Halo complicated. Brought guilt into it. When you do finally get back to the spartan body you feel guilty about throwing a grenade into a crowd of covenant aliens because you know what it means for them.
Basically, if your getting this game for singleplayer and you don't have a large group of LAN players or system linkers to play with, there's little reason to buy Halo 2.

Gameplay(Online): 10/10
I can feel the veins in my head actually bursting when I struggle to describe Halo 2 online via words.
It is without a doubt the best online FPS I have ever played.
-The social aspect is brilliant. Within a week you'll have your network of friends set up online and you'll feel compelled to log on and play with them and have a good laugh.
-The online interface is superb. You've got a friends list, clan list, recent players list which are all accessed at light speed and the menu is colourful and very personal.
-You can design your own logo. Never underestimate this little feature. I've been known to spend more than 10 minutes just fiddling with the logo designer.
-A great levelling system. Levels give you something to work for. They mark your progress. You start at level one and can go anywhere up to level 50. Like in any online game, you get overweight losers who cheat just to get themselves more respect in a video game because they don't respect themselves in real life. Bungie (the makers of Halo) have worked tirelessly to prevent cheating, and they have done excellently. It's a hard task to prevent fat losers with good programming skills finding ways to make themselves into cool internet dudes with a level 50 in a video game. Saying that, these losers make up less than 10% of the halo 2 community and there is millions of mature, reasonable and fun players just waiting to enjoy Halo 2 with you.
-Great mathcmaking system:
Team Slayer (4v4 straight up killin')
Team Skirmish (Objective Matches)
Rumble Pit (Free for all. 8 players)
Head to Head (1v1. Killin'. Trash talk is optional)
Big Team Battle (Objective Matches. 8v8)
Double Team (2v2. Killin' and objective. FUN)

All of these gametypes are extremely fun. You can always find a game quickly and lagg is a rareity in comparison to other online games.

When not in matchmaking, custom games can easily fill your time. Invite your friends to your brand spankin' new custom gametype and you can have fun by the bucket load.

Overall, Halo 2 is a sensational game, but it all depends if your going to fork out extra to get Xbox Live.

4.0 out of 5 stars Class Game! Frustratingly Short!, 19 Nov 2004
By A Customer
The game was completely top class! Was bieng the key word!
It is alot shorter than I expected though. 3 days is all it took for me to complete this game on Heroic (one of the harder modes). I am dissapointed considering how long I had to wait for the game to come out. Never the less, the game was exelent while it lasted!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, 29 Nov 2004
By T. S. Marsh (Cambridge, MA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Despite owning an XBox since there release I've only recently bought Halo. I have to admit I was impressed. The game play was so fluid that I didn't even notice that a large portion of the games greatness was a result of mind blowingly good AI. What I did notice were levels that overused repetition and forced you replay levels with fewer weapons against more foes. I'm also not entirely sure why reviewers are waxing lyrical about the amazing plot. where Halo excelled was in player-centric design. Automatic saving, automatic respawning after death and foes worthy of rebattling when the check-point was that little bit too long-ago.

Halo 2 takes all of this and improves on it. Better graphics, better AI, better battles and a more engaging plot. Bungie have also introduced more weapons and added an extra level of complexity to your stratergies: dual weapons for ultimate firepower, or single weapon and grenades for... ultimate fire power!

I've read reviews saying that the game is too short. Those people weren't playing the game on its true setting: legendary. Remember, Halo 2 is all about battles, struggles and being outsmarted by your XBox.

Once you've finished the game there is Live. Halo 2 made X-Box Live a must have technology adding an unlimited ammount of playabilty.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!!!, 4 Jan 2006
By A Customer
This game is unbelievably AWESOME.Greatest xbox game of all time!! When the first Halo game was released for Xbox only it was a whole new experience. It had a great plot, it was gruesome and had incredible graphics , It was just a great game.... until Halo 2 was released. The Halo 2 plot is even better than the first one. Covenant forces attack Earth in order to get revenge for the first halo being destroyed. Human forces on Earth are outnumbered- this is where MasterChief comes in! He is a genically modified super human- armed and dangerous!! You play the game from beginning to end as MasterChief whether you fight along side with other humans or alone. This game is definitely worth getting even if you don't like first person shooters!

5.0 out of 5 stars Why to buy an Xbox, why to play games, why to live, 19 Sep 2005
By carys (wales) - See all my reviews
Halo 2 answers all of the above questions, simply, it is amazing. For every one gamer out there, whether you like Fps's(First person shooters) or not, Halo 2 has something for you. If its not the raw intensity of chasing down a group of covenant grunts, it will be the depth of the storyline, the superb graphics, or the compelling music.
It is simply a MUST buy for any Xbox owners, and will be enough to convert many Ps2 player to the great black box.
