5.0 out of 5 stars The first two classic albums, 18 Dec. 2006

These two classic albums still represent the very best work of Nina Hagen. All the great songs are here: early German gems like Unbeschreiblich Weiblich, her version of the Tubes' White Punks On Dope (TV Glotzer), her breathtaking operatic rock excursions Natuertraene & Heiss, all of the aforementioned from the debut album Nina Hagen Band. This album became an instant cult item on the indie/alternative scene around 1978 but was perhaps too quirky and unusual to establish her in mainstream rock.

The second album, Unbehagen, provides the catchy Wir Leben Immer Noch (The Lene Lovich song Lucky Number), the brilliant African Reggae and the lilting Fall In Love Mit Mir. Her music became more accessible with this release, veering into mainstream rock, reggae and pop. The great melodies and intelligent lyrics with enthusiastic playing by her band ensure the classic status of Unbehagen. Demonstrating what can be achieved by integrating reggae rhythms into a rock format, the album is more immediately enjoyable than the debut. Her vocal gymnastics are less in evidence than on the first album, but the voice is still brilliantly utilised. An excellent, timeless classic!

These exceptional albums show the creative genius burning brightly in her late 70s work, extending the boundaries of rock, punk and reggae in its seamless operatic fusion and innovative rhythmic explorations. She performs with enthusiasm, the playing is tight and the arrangements are always captivating, whether mainstream or experimental. The music has aged very well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece, 18 Dec. 2006

This review is from: Unbehagen (Audio CD)
This is one great album by the German punk rocker, perhaps her best individual work. Unbehagen is more accessible than the debut, representing a definite move towards melodic mainstream rock, pop and reggae, and it contains some truly memorable songs.

African Reggae is a powerful tour de force and by the way, a dancefloor classic, Wir Leben Immer Noch (Lene Lovich's Lucky Number) is a perfect pop song, and Wenn Ich Ein Junge War with its somewhat risque lyrics just about bursts with exuberance. Fall In Love mit Mir is another catchy number, but every track has its own charms.

The great melodies and intelligent lyrics with enthusiastic playing by her band ensure the classic status of this album. In my opinion, this is her Opus Magnum. It demonstrates what can be achieved by integrating reggae rhythms into a rock format, while the rock songs remain top of the league. Her vocal gymnastics are less in evidence than on the debut album, but her voice is still brilliantly utilised. An excellent, timeless classic!

haven't heard this in decades, having just bought this on cd and hearing it again makes me realise what a gem of an album unbehagen is.unless you're german or speak fluent german you wont have a clue what miss hagen is singing about! but that is of no consequence as the musicianship on every track is outstanding.my favourite tracks are the excellent african reggae, wir leben immer...noch her take on lene lovich's lucky number and wau wau, which seems to be her version of i wanna be your dog! all the tracks are excellent,as are nina's vocals sounding eerie and menacing. essential listening!
