4.0 out of 5 stars Classic disco-era jazz-funk
Deodato ended the 70's on a high note with an album full of all-stars. The stand out and much sought-after 'Whistle Bump' brings a beautifully laid-back synth-led melody perfectly fusing disco and jazz. From George Benson to Harvey Mason, 'Love-Island' reflects a new direction for jazz-infused music that would have an influence on the quality 'smooth jazz' recordings of...

The stand out and much sought-after 'Whistle Bump' brings a beautifully laid-back synth-led melody perfectly fusing disco and jazz. From George Benson to Harvey Mason, 'Love-Island' reflects a new direction for jazz-infused music that would have an influence on the quality 'smooth jazz' recordings of the 80's. He finished the decade by recording the first of four recordings with Kool and the Gang 'Ladies' Night and with whom he would get paid his greatest pay cheques as producer. Look out for his two best-ever recordings in the form of 'Prelude' and 'Deodato 2' both on CTI records.

Bought this when it first came out and thought it was a great album, particularly Chariot of the Gods. Sold all my records twenty years ago but recorded them all on cassette first. Sometimes one comes out to be played, you still love it, and you just have to look for the C.D.. Eventually it is released, you just have to wait and check every now and then. This was one of them, a great find and no scratches !

4.0 out of 5 stars Dated but still worth a listen, 31 July 2009
This review is from: Love Island (Audio CD)
To those of you that aren't in the know Eumir Deodato is a Brazilian musician who makes jazz with a latin American flavour. Unless you have seen Peter Seller's film "Being There" you probably won't have come across his music, and even if you've seen the film you might not even know some of the music was his. But lack of fame doesn't mean lack of talent or creativity. Love Island is an album from 1978 full beautiful tunes, some laid back and others up-tempo all of which will lift your spirits. My favourite being Chariot of the Gods.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the keyboard/synth sound is a very late 1970's sound and it does come across as being dated but if you ignore this you are in for a latin treat.
