.....Peter Hill gently and persuasively makes the case for the most profound piano music of the twentieth century. The playing of the Catalogue d'Oiseaux will probably never be equalled ; Hill's timing is so obviously "right", and La Fauvette des Jardins is a sustained and ecstatic outpouring of music, of engagement with nature, and imaginative transformation. The playing of Vingt Regards is very different, but just as valid, as Aimard's approach (which is also excellent). I would still prefer Rabinovtich and Argerich in Visions de l'Amen, but together with definitive versions of the other piano works, this is an extraordinary achievement.

This collection is full of exquisite piano pieces that show off fantastic technical piano skills. Dont expect riffs, tunes or hum alongs: Messaien's music is sublime and best listened to with total concentration. This collection captures the spirit of the birds Messaien was emulating wonderfully. A collection for meditation, reverie and sets a challenge for the serious piano student.Excellent.
