Five film-lets tracking five unrelated simultaneous nocturnal taxi journeys in Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Rome and Helsinki, in that order. 'Los Angeles' makes a fairly dull opening, 'New York' is funny, 'Paris' thoughtful and 'Helsinki' darkly humourous. However, it is Roberto Benigni's hilarious performance as the manic taxi driver of 'Rome' which steals this film entirely.

Beautifully crafted tale of five simultaneous taxi rides, each in various cities around the world.
In each scene, driver and passenger are separated by more than the usual pane of glass - they are more like complete social, cultural and/or moral opposites. Jarmusch uses this clash to create side splittingly funny banter between the characters.
This film is laid back and there is no plot as such but it is definitely worth watching for the astutely observed dialogue.

Jim Jarmusch once said, "The beauty of life is in small details, not in big events." In his movie Night on Earth he has shown in a brilliant way that this is true.
For those who find the New York episode fascinating, a book has just been published dealing exclusively with that episode: Bernd Wahlbrinck, "Jim Jarmusch's NIGHT ON EARTH: THE NEW YORK EPISODE - with an appendix for English teachers" I think it's a treat ...

The film is in 4 different languages - I saw it originally with English subtitles over the different languages but please note this version has German subtitles.

Be careful of the region coding. Fortunately I was able to give this to a relative abroad and then buy the Blu-Ray for myself but if you need a region 2 this is region 4 and won't play in the UK. As for the film, it is a must-see and unlike anything you'll ever see .. other than maybe another film by the same guy. It is in fact five short films with a related them although they are all very different and by turns poignant, funny, macarbe and insightful. You'll pend the rest of your life trying to forget the Italian taxi driver but you won't manage to. :-)

Excellent downbeat humour from Jarmusch, using cab rides inf five different cities around the world to explore the Human Condition. Non-English dialogue is translated in sub-titles. All good, but the Rome scene with Roberto Beniigni is so indecently funny it merits several viewings.

Why has the seller omitted to state this video only has German subtitles? especially as this is available with English subtitles.

The DVD was delivered from a German source in Europe. Annoying that I cannot get rid of the German sub-titles! The film itself however, is every bit as good as I remember from seeing it in the cinema.
