This review is from: Monk (Audio CD)
This overlooked quartet album from the great pianist/composer Thelonious Monk(1917-1982) was recorded in New York on October 6-8 & March 9, 1964 with tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse, bassist Larry Gales and drummer Ben Riley.
Everyone is in exuberant form on the seven tracks(plus 2 alternative takes and a medley) and highlights include Monk's 'Pannonica'(2 takes) & 'Teo', 'April in Paris'(2 takes), a wonderful version of 'Chldren's Song(That Old Man)' and a solo piano version of the obscure 'I Love You(Sweetheart Of All My Dreams).
'Monk' contains over 68 minutes of inventive and exhilarating music which still sounds fresh almost 50 years later and deserves to be better known.
