Born in Bristol as Trevor Stanford, he used Russ Conway as his stage name. The piano never sounded more exciting than when Russ played it in his lively, exciting style. Anybody who thinks that piano music is sleep-inducing hasn't heard Russ Conway.
If you remember his music, you'll know that anyway - nobody who was around at the time (even if only as a child) could ever forget Side saddle, one of his two UK number one hits. Russ also made number one with Roulette and had five other UK top ten hits including China tea, Snow coach, Toy balloons and two party pops medleys. He had several lesser UK hits including Lucky five, Always you and me, Pepe, Got a match, Passing breeze, Pablo, World outside, Royal event and two other party pops medleys.
This compilation includes most of Russ Conway's hits together with his distinctive interpretations of La mer (better known by its English title, Beyond the sea, though either will do for this instrumental), Rule Britannia, Mack the knife and other great tunes.
Nobody ever made the piano sound more exciting than Russ Conway - and that includes Liberace.

OK, so I am a sad relic of the 50s and 60s when Russ Conway was at the height of his career. But this CD brought back so many memories, starting with "Side Saddle". It was fun to recall the music and the CD recording was excellent. It was well protected in the post and arrived unblemished.

Russ Conway....a cornerstone of the 60's. While the Beatles were on the up, and the Stones were beginning to roll, Russ belted out so many hits you could lose count.
I recall as a child seeing him appear on so many Saturday night TV shows as a guest, and can remember hearing him on the radio, where his distinctive style and personality shone through every time.
Side Saddle in particular takes me back to my childhood in an instant. Happy, carefree days.
If you like this style of piano playing, you can't go wrong with this compilation.

Although I didnt always apprecaite Russ when younger, Monkees and Motown got in the way,on purchasing this for my Mum found myself tinkling down memory lane to it and found it thoroughly enjoyable. I like variety in my music and this provides it.

Throughout the late 50s and 60s, Russ Conway had a string of hits with his unique high energy piano playing. Verging into honky-tonk territory at times, he bashed out a series of great foot tapping tunes that really do stand out from what most other British artists were doing at the time. This single disc collection does a fine job of collecting his best known hits into a 24 track compilation that gives you all the Russ Conway you will ever need. The sound quality is excellent and this is an all round bargain. 5 stars.

Russ Conway for my money cut his greatest single in 1962 namely Lesson One-a twist version of the famous Chopsticks.
He meant little in the States though could easily have done when so many foreign instrumentals were charting especially from Germany. He got no further than bubbling under with Roulette which says something about radio play.During the British Invasion more notice was taken about what came from England but by this time Russ Conway had seen better days.

I bought this for my mum for Christmas, she is in her 80s and used to listen to him when we were growing up. It was really worth it to see the happy smile of recognition when the first track started. This is a happy upbeat CD, with nothing too demanding of the listener but great for background listening.
