This is a delightful romantic comedy, Bollywood style, with an excellent cast. Indian dance instructor, Ramu Gupta (Jimi Mistry), wants to seek fame and fortune. So, what better place is there to do that in than the United States? He leaves India and joins some of his friends who are already in New York and making it big, or so he thinks. He is quickly divested of that idea once he arrives and finds them working in restaurants and driving taxis. He temporarily takes a job as a waiter in an Indian restaurant, while seeking his fame and fortune.
Ramu then seeks work in a film, initially not realizing the type of film that it is. When he gets the part, he meets his co-star, Sharonna (Heather Graham), who is a lovely young woman, but finds himself unable to go through with the role, despite Sharonna's philosophical guidance, as it is nothing more than a porn film. When he goes to a high society party where his friends are working, he finds himself with an unexpected opportunity, when the hired Swami falls down into a drunken stupor just before he is to begin entertaining the guests. He is then thrust into the role of Swami. Passing off some of Sharonna's philosophical encouragement as pearls of wisdom, Ramu suddenly finds himself thrust into the role of the Guru of sex. It is at that party that he begins a relationship with the daughter of the house, Lexi (Marisa Tomei), a seriously silly, fabulously wealthy young woman who lacks direction in her life, but believe that she has found something special with Ramu.
With her connections, she puts Ramu on the fast track to fame and fortune. Still, his initial sexual philosophy came from Sharonna, so he arranges to meet with her for some more philosophical guidance, under the theory that he needs her help in order for him to be able to get over his fear of breaking into the porn business. Using her pearls of wisdom, Ramu develops a following, and Ramu, as well as his friends, find themselves traveling on a first class gravy train. In the meantime, Ramu also finds himself falling in love with Sharonna.
Sharonna, meanwhile, is leading a double life, as her firefighter fiance thinks that she is a substitute teacher. He and his family have no idea that she is a porn star, and she prefers to keep it that way. Her fiancé is a serious Irish Catholic, who does not even believe in consummating their relationship before marriage. This should have told Sharonna something right off the bat. While helping Ramu, not knowing that her pearls of wisdom are being used by him in the context of his being the Guru of sex, she, too, begins falling in love with him, only she doesn't know it, as yet.
With its Bollywood style musical numbers, this is a fun, lighthearted film that boasts an excellent cast. Heather Graham is simply wonderful in the role of Sharonna, the porn star with the heart of gold who is doing it simply for the money. Jimi Mistry is delightful as the Guru of sex, funny and sexy. Marissa Tomei is terrific as the madcap heiress, who has too much money and too much time on her hands. Christina Baranski is excellent as Chantal, Lexi's wacky upper crust mother. The film holds some surprises, but never fails to amuse. Those who like Bollywood style films, will definitely enjoy this one.

In this sweet adult comedy, Ramu (Jimi Mistry) leaves India to seek fame and fortune in New York City, only to find the streets aren't really paved with gold. He is innocently hired to be in an adult film and his costar is the lovely Sharonna (Heather Graham), a pro who's got a heart of gold. He accidentally gains a reputation as a love guru, with the help of an air-headed socialite (Marissa Tomei), but finds true love with Sharonna.
The plot may sound trite, but, thanks to the charm and appeal of Jimi Mistry and the clever script, it's really quite good. Mistry plays the wide-eyed innocent perfectly, and is handsome and charismatic enough to carry off the role of media darling. Graham has her best role to date as the endearing adult film star/girl-next-door. Tomei gives a good performance as the silly rich girl without becoming tiresome. Michael McKean almost steals the show (as usual) as the sleazy movie director. The fish-out-of-water, East meets West story has a lot of laughs and some touching moments as well.

This 2002 romantic comedy tells the tale of Ramu Gupta (Jimi Mistry), a ‘Bollywood’ style dance teacher, lured from Dehli to New York by the exaggerations of his cousin and ends up with a role alongside Sharonna [Heather Graham] in a pornographic film which goes badly wrong. At a society birthday party for Lexi (Marisa Tomei), the Indian swami hired to address them falls into drunken stupor and Ramu takes his place. Lexi is so impressed that she promotes him as a New Age sex guru to her friends. But with the help of Sharonna, [whose fiancé doesn’t know of her adult acting career], and who believes she’s helping him with his acting, can he pull off the deception?
The film has a good balance of dance routines and music with a strong ‘Bollywood’ influence, the cast is likeable and both Graham –as the adult star/girl next door, and Tomei as the naive rich meditation student. are perfect for the roles and Mistry has a charm and humour enabling him to make a perfect guru and his take off of Tom Cruise in Risky Business is great must see.
The single disc opens to a main menu offering play, scenes, bonus [4 trailers, photo-gallery, deleted scenes sugarbabes video, and 2 commentaries], languages [English & English DTS, Magyar] and subtitles[English/Magyar] and with some swearing and frank talk of sex, this is a 15 rating. Yet it’s strength is in the way almost everyone is eventually forced to face reality and their own fears. The witty parodies of well known films are a bonus and the end may be sentimental but it still makes this an enjoyable ***** view.

Feel-good movie starring Jimi Mistry (the fit one from 'East Is East')

When I first saw this film, I don't think I was impressed - I'm now wondering why! I guess having seen Jimi as a 'serious' heartthrob in East Is East, perhaps I expected something similar in this, but here, his character is a bit of a 'bungler'. It's the second time I've seen it, and this time around (perhaps looking at it from a different perspective) thought it was hilarious! There's something in this for everyone, and some very comical 'crossed-wires'.

I suspect this was an intended 'vehicle' for Jimi Mistry in the U.S. after the success of 'East Is East' a couple of years before, but surprisingly seems to have done little else over there since. He still looks good in this, but some of the weird costumes worn by the character do not help his talents.

Enjoy this, but be prepared to see Jimi prancing about doing some outrageous dance routines minus his trousers!!

If you have got nothing to do then this is worth a laugh, I really did enjoy it but I was not looking for anything other than a good chuckle. It is not a film to be taken seriously, it is typical of Bollywood style and flaunts it with absolute abandon. Everything is OTT including the acting so grab some snacks and settle down for a daft laugh.

Well, I think I said it in the title. Those who mark this down obviously want what's obvious and have no idea in the post Tarantino days what charm and wit is. A warm, film hilarious at times, wise and witty and a homespun warmth lost on those who want a slick package. More please!

Whiles away an hour and a half, but although amusing, this very light comedy has little plot and little substance. Usual comedy structure boy meets girl, boy gets into all sorts of trouble, but some may find the sex references not to their taste.

It's just such lazy formulaic rom-com . . . kissing A to the "spiritually enlightened east" . . .
Here's the basic premise "West/Americans all decadent, stupid and bad" . . . "east . . . wise cunning, lovable and so much cooler" . . . PaaaLeese. . . the vomit bag if u don't mind . slagging the west is just so safe and soft targeting. . . its a tired old foe that feels so lazy when its brough out again to be mocked.

My thoughts are that if we really have to operate in the realm of such clique can we at least "be funny"?? It's a cynical attempt to lure the Bollywood market into something from the Hollywood biscuit machine. . . . Did it work ??? Well how many cross cultural flicks like this have emerged since its release ?? Not too many I think.
