For fans of this movie looking for the long sought after "original director's cut" of 54, sadly it's not on this Blu-ray release. What is presented here is the heavily edited theatrical version and an extended cut (which basically has longer musical sequences). Whilst the picture quality is pretty good, the sound is a little on the soft side but once you turn it up you'll feel like you're in the legendary club Studio 54. This film has one of the best soundtracks of vintage late 70's early 80's dance music you're ever likely to hear. Why only three stars? There are NO bonus features. Not even the video for Stars on 54's mega hit "If You Could Read My Mind" or a theatrical trailer. Maybe one day the original director's version will see the light of my bluray laser. I await it's release in anticipation.

BIG note to Mirimax/Studio Canal :- Please release the original cut of the film. It needs to be seen as the director intended. You'll make your money back as it really has gained cult film status.

54 is a film of outstanding emotional depth. It focuses on the efforts of a young out-of-town boy trying to make it big. The setting is the club Studio 54, where drugs and sex are the norm, if you know the right people. It is a portrayal of the rich and careless, in a world where anything and everything is available for the right price. We see the main character's rollercoaster ride up into the heady heights, and his ultimate inner struggle with morals and sensibilities. An outstanding film, containing all the right ingredients for a fascinating insight.

I'm a huge fan of the mythos of the origial Studio 54, but unfortunately Miramax wouldn't let Mark Christopher have the final say. Ryan Phillipe's suprisingly good performance is cut, to highlight his torso and pout - and Mike Myers isn't given HALF enough time to show off his amazing take on Steve Rubell. Neve Cambell is as dull as usual, but gladly her on screen time is very limited.

Overall, quite a depressing film - but only in the same way that Saturday Night Fever isn't a disco at all - it's a harsh telling of a 70s story.

I was pleasantly surprised by this film, but it would have been SO much better if Miramax had let Christopher do what he intended, and kept all the cuts. What we need is a director's cut - that would get 5 stars.

Studio 54 was an amazing interaction of exhibitionism, disco and showmanship. The film views it from the level of the busboy and hat-check girl as the usual young hopefuls rub up (in more ways than one) with fame. At times it has a Boogie Nights feel to it, not as sad certainly, but the same feeling of a strange family created out of hope and disillusion. Given the whole concept of disco is fairly vacuous in terms of defining lives the film does an admirable job; and lucky old Mike Myers to play Steve Rubell, an excellent role despite him looking like André Previn's naughty twin brother.

Anybody who grew up in the heyday of Studio 54, will know all too well the giddy heights that this club aspired too. This is an excellent film which delves into the behind scenes of the club and its owner, as well as the dancefloor antics too.
Altogether a great film, with a great cast and stunning soundtrack. Not to be missed!!!

This glitz `n' glamour black comedy drama charting the life of the most popular nightclub in the world takes place in the late 70's where only the pretty in pink were allowed in and the prettier in pink get picked to work there... Ryan Phillippe plays a hunky teenager who's first night at the club ends up in him becoming a bartender, its there he is introduced to a world of sex, drugs and all-night every-night parties, an unrecognisable Mike Myers is great as the nightclubs enthusiastic gay owner while the visuals of the movie are simply dazzling, so visual you will feel like you are on drugs yourself yet underneath all the glitz lies a pretty empty film underneath.

Sure it's not possible to remont the whole scenario back in disco times in one movie but it was fun to watch and imagine how was the that magical place called studio 54.
