Great headphones at a great price., 17 Dec 2002
By A Customer
I recently purchased a pair of these headphones after I accidently broke my beloved 12-year old Sonys. The Philips phones cost me less than half of what the Sonys did, and to be honest the 890s sound better. The frequency range of the 891s is more than wide enough for any type of music. They have a smooth response with warm lows, sweet highs and a well defined midrange. I have used them on DVDs, music and computer games and they sound very crisp and produce even small details very clearly. Due to the large felt ear cushions these headphones are very comfortable to wear. They are a little on the large size, but build quality is excellent. You also get a nice stand for you phones too. Summing up a top notch pair of headphones at what can only be regarded as a budget price

Big headphones, Bigger sound!, 21 Jul 2004
Firstly, these headphones are big! no photo will ever give away their actual size. But don't be put off by that, they're not heavy or uncomfotable. Thier luxurious velvet ear cusions provide superb comfort, even for long periods of use, and they don't get all sweaty like leather cusions! Sound wise, they produce a full bodied sound, crisp clear highs and detailed punchy lows. For those who like to listen loudly, they cope fine, only when pushed to the top end of your voume selector will they begin to distort. The build quality is good and the detachable cable a handy idea. The speaker drivers can be adjusted to many angles, ideal for DJ's and they've also included a very handy stand for when they aren't in use. Give them a listen with your favourate CD and see what you think!

Nice body. Bad driver?, 10 Feb 2004
I had great expectationsfor these 'top of the range' headphones. And who wouldn't? At the price you would expect them to sound as good as they look. After all, it's ultimately the sound performance which is of most importance. When you get them out of the impressive packaging, they look the business. Beautiful to look at. Luxurious and fairly weighty but perhaps a little bulky and somewhat fragile feeling. They do feel lovely on the head and yes the soft velvet cushions do seem to 'embrace the wearer.' Once you plug 'em in it is,however,a different story. If I had to describe their performance in one word it would be 'dull.' Bass is excellent and solid. But when it comes to vocals, either listening to CD's or DVD's there is a lack of punch and vitality. When the volume ic cranked-up there is some noticeable sibilation on trebles. All in all very disappointing performance-wise. What Philips have done here is just very clever marketing. It may catch on in car manufacturing, although I don't see why anyone would want to put a Ford engine inside a Rolls Royce body! If you're after a great pair of headphones try out Sony's MDR-V300's which Amazon currently sell at a bargain price. They beat the Philips hands down and you could buy three pairs and still be left with money in your pocket!

Very good head phones, 10 Feb 2003
I brought these headphones couple of months back and they are really nice. Sound quality both at high and low frequencies is good. Comfort is good. There are some minor problems though. At high sound levels your neighbour can also hear what your are listening to. Gives best performance when used at medium and low sound levels (frequency response remains good at all levels)In short, a good buy at a good price
